Leaves your skin prefectly hydrated!

I had never tried a facial cleansing oil before and I was sceptical. After trying this Rosemary and Lavender Cleansing Oil, I will never go back to commercial face wash products. It smells great, feels amazing and leaves your skin perfectly hydrated! Not too oily and not too dry. I love it.

Krysta

Gentle but effective!

I use this as an everyday cleanser before bed. It is gentle but effective in removing basic makeup and cleansing my skin. It leaves my skin feeling clean and hydrated, unlike commercial products that left my sensitive skin feeling tight and red.

Lowen's You Sure Clean Up Nice! Face and Body Wash

My face feels smooth for hours!

Great face and body wash. I’m always skeptical of cleansers that claim they’re good enough for body and face but this one really is. I hate when face wash doesn’t rinse off well or body wash leaves too much residue. This one does the job without the feeling of gunk left on you. I also have pretty sensitive skin (especially on the face) and it felt good going on and rinsing off. Like other Lowen’s products it has a fun name

Yuka

Highly recommended!

This product is another example of how well Lowen’s does texture. I love how smooth their products are. Although this product is meant as a face/body wash, I only tried it on my face. It didn’t quite lather the way I expected but I didn’t care because…smooth! Like other Lowen’s products I’ve tried, the scent is au naturale and barely there. No sneezing or skin irritations, which is a big plus in my world.

Sue

A great “everything” cream!

Nice scent and lathers well, face felt nice, not too dry after

It leaves my face feeling smooth for hours.
Love-Love this glorious product.

Melts right in to my skin!

Really appreciate finding this product. I am cautious about what products I choose for health reasons. Good Karma four in one face cream has given me the moisturizing results and healthy skin that I have been wanting for a long time. I recommend the product highly.

Ellie

Great moisturizer!

When used after the G.K. Toner, this is a great “everything” cream. I use it morning and night all over my face for smooth, refreshing, and glowing skin. A really great product!

Say YES To The Miracles Of Argan Oil

Say YES To The Miracles Of Argan Oil

You may have heard about argan oil, especially if you’re one to prefer natural skincare products. On beauty and personal care labels, you’ll see the ingredient labelled like this: Argania Spinosa (Argan) kernel oil.

The Miracle Oil of Nature

Argan oil: a rich, cold-pressed oil that is harnessed from the fruit kernel of the Moroccan Argan tree. It has many uses in cosmetics, working wonders for dry or aged skin, damaged hair or fragile nails. Regularly using argan oil for moisturizing your skin can reduce the amount of sebum, naturally suppressing oiliness and acne. That being said, it also helps keep your insides healthy! The edible version of hand pressed oil is a good antioxidant, it has hepatoprotective properties that can protect the liver and it can also prevent spikes in blood sugar levels.

If you don’t yet own products with argan oil, consider adding one of the following products in your skincare collection!

1.Immersion Botanica – Jojoba & Sea Buckthorn Facial Nutrient Serum

Replenish important skin nutrients with these oils rich in antioxidants, photo protective, regenerating vitamins A, B, C, E, and omega 3 & 6 essential fatty acids.

1.Shea Butter Market – Shea Lips

Shea Butter Market Shea Lips

Leaves the skin fresh and clean!

Great lip moisturizer. The dry cold weather gets me every year. This product helped soothe my dry cracked lips. Note: I’m a lip balm veteran – used blistex, vaseline, etc.

Rob

Felt like I was at a spa!

The citrus flavour is really great! A little bit thick in consistency but a little does go a long way. My only note would be that I do need to reapply a little more frequently then I do with something like vaseline.

Sarah

So gentle and refreshing!

Great scent, but I had to reapply quite often.

Micheline

2. Bee Real – Lip Balm

Feels natural on the scalp!

I use this in both winter and summer. It keeps my lips moist in winter, no cracks and you don’t have to keep re-applying after a drink or food. Summer time protection from the sun is on point. My kids use them in winter too!

Debora A L.

I have sleep apnea and often wake up with dry cracked lips from using the mask. Since I’ve been using this lip balm my lips are always smooth and crack free. My fav is the peppermint.

Janice H.

I use this all year round; I buy a dozen at a time and have one at work, in the car, my purse, and every coat pocket! It’s the perfect consistency and not greasy. I love the peppermint

3. Om Organics – Lip Butter

Fantastic!

This is super hydrating and it has become my go-to for whenever my lips feel dry! The ingredients are all natural, and the effect the product has on my lips is amazing

Tasneem

Gentle yet effective!

It is a nice smooth lip butter. I only gave 4 stars because I found it still wasn’t enough to keep my lips hydrated in the winter and I still needed to moisturize them.

Candice

I don’t even need foundation!

I keep this at my desk to use throughout the day. It’s really lovely to apply (tastes great and goes on nice and smooth) however I don’t find that it lasts long enough for me.

Shaving Cream

Always Bearded - Begamot & Ylang with Distilled Cedarwood

Feels natural on the scalp!

My hubby tried this product, and while he doesn’t have a beard, he’s used to using natural products which are often great on his skin but way to greasy for his liking. He was happy to report that this cream does the job without being super slippery .. just a great comfortable moisturizer without all the mess.

Gail

Gave my hair a natural look!

I really liked this product, especially in comparison to the next one. Firstly, I have a super curly and short beard. This cream has a splendid smell and a great texture to it. It doesn’t stick to your hand (like oil does), and yet it softens the beard a bit which is nice.

Mohamed F.

Recommended!

I typically use a beard oil with a strong scent (and my girlfriend likes). I’ve tried other products and this was the only one that did seem to leave the beard softer. I’m not sure if it was better than the beard oil, but it was a nice change. The only downside was I found I needed to use a lot of it to get it everywhere.

Moor Spa Massage Balm Purifying / Revitalizing

Fantastic!

I like the smell of this product a lot, but I find on my skin it comes out a little greasy! I have extremely dry skin on my hands (I used it for a hand massage) and it just kind of sat on top. I love the smell and how it melts, but it didn’t absorb much for me.

Daniela

Gentle yet effective!

Not greasy as long as you give it a good massage. Great as a night cream!

Melanie

I don’t even need foundation!

Tried the revitalizing balm. As the descriptions says… as soon as you touch the product, it melts into oil. It has a nice unique citrus-y scent, and leaves the skin a bit shiny. It absorbed okay for me, so it gets 4 stars. I’d recommend this balm.

Vivian

The Gut-Skin Connection: 3 secrets to beautiful skin

My Secret to Beautiful Skin by Nora DeBora

I am a Certified Yoga Instructor, Personal Trainer and Holistic Nutritionist who focuses on bringing health back to balance through healing the gut.

Age: 34

Hair Type: Thick, curly, coarse

Skin Concerns: None

Values: Optimal Digestion = Optimal Health. Eat whole foods, what mother nature so beautifully provides.

My Secret to Beautiful Skin by Nora DeBora

People with beautiful, radiant skin, aren’t just lucky! Ok, maybe a few are. But, people with beautiful skin generally tend to follow three secrets. They nourish, protect and treat not only their skin topically, but also their gut internally. If you visited a dermatologist as little as ten years ago, you probably would have been informed the there was little or no connection between diet and skin health, but this is far from accurate. Just as your diet can prevent cancer, ward off degenerative conditions, reverse diabetes and heart disease, so can your diet affect your skin.

Your body is compromised of almost 100 billion cells, all of which are made up of protein and fat. Carbohydrates are the fuel for these cells. If you do not eat enough protein your skin will sag, your hair will fall out and wounds will be slow to heal. If you don’t eat enough good fats, your skin will become dry and dull before its time, and your hair and nails will become brittle. Vitamins, minerals and plant nutrients also help the skin by repairing damage, building it’s structure and maintaining hydration.

Wait! It doesn’t stop there. Even if you eat the healthiest, most nourishing skin diet, this is half the battle. You also need to make sure your digestive system can reap its benefits.

HOW GUT PERMEABILITY INFLUENCES YOUR SKIN

Now let’s talk about digestion. This 38 foot long tube functions completely on its own and is responsible for delivering nutrients to your entire body, including your skin.  The lining of your small intestines is where this magic happens. However, over time, this paper thin lining can become irritated and inflamed, compromising how your body absorbs, digests and assimilates these nutrients. This irritation and inflammation is caused by several factors including stress, drugs, medication, poor diet, toxins, sedentary lifestyle and chemicals from household and personal care products. You may know this phenomenon as intestinal permeability, a.k.a. “leaky gut” and it is highly correlated to the health of your skin.

Let’s take a moment to focus on the latter irritants, personal care products. Yes, the very stuff you put on your skin can affect the health of your gut. Your body’s largest organ, the skin, is porous and absorbs whatever you put on it.  Your body absorbs over 70% of what you put on it. These chemicals leach into your blood stream which circulates throughout the body and can compromise the health of your gut.

With so many variables influencing the health of your skin, I’ve put together 3 simple secrets to help nourish, protect and treat your skin.

3 Secrets to Beautiful Skin

#1 NOURISH

A diet plentiful in dark coloured vegetables and fruits, lean meats and fish, and essential fatty acids will benefit your complexion. If you consistently supply your body with the quality raw materials that it needs, it will reward you with smooth, radiant, glowing skin. I call these specific foods your ‘Skin Nutrient Superstars.”

Vitamin A helps prevent acne, blemishes and keeps away dry scaly skin.

Food sources: sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, winter squashes, lettuce, dried apricots, cantaloupe, bell peppers, fish, liver, and tropical fruits.

Vitamin B required for new cell formation and protein synthesis, in addition to oxygen usage by skin cells.

Food sources: liver, eggs, dark leafy greens, sardines, mackerel

Vitamin C is required for the formation of collagen, while preventing skin damage.

Food sources: peppers, dark leafy greens, broccoli, berries and kiwi fruit

Iron is responsible for oxygen transport to cells, energy production and skin colour. Low iron causes black and blue circles under your eyes.

Food sources: red meat, poultry, dark leafy greens and lentils

#2 PROTECT

Aside from protecting your skin from the foods you eat, topical application is also extremely nourishing. More than ever, shoppers struggle to recognize safer beauty products on store shelves because they’re practically indistinguishable.  I recently partnered with CertClean, one of North America’s leading certification companies for safer beauty and personal care products. As a judge for their 2017 Clean Beauty Awards, I’ve had the pleasure of testing out a variety of their natural body care products. So far, so great!

Keep your eyes peeled here for the announcement of the 2017 awards. You can rest assure that these products will naturally nourish your skin from the outside in.

#3 TREAT

We’ve reviewed some nutritional and topical remedies for beautiful, glowing skin. To take it up a notch, you can also treat your skin with nutritional supplements. Here are a few of my favourites

GLA for glowing skin: essential fatty acids (EFA’s) are the good fats that are essential for beautiful, dewy skin. They are necessary for moisturizing, preventing skin aging while decreasing wrinkles and treating acne.

Source: GLA can be found in borage oil (approximately 22-24 perfect). Try taking 500mg per day for two months consistently to start seeing results.

Collagen (also known as the foundation of your skin) is the single, most abundant protein in the human body and is critical to skin health.

Sources: it is important to make sure that your collagen obtained from grass-fed and pastured humanely raised sources from a reputable company.

Probiotics: Oral probiotics have been shown to decrease lipopolysaccharide, improve intestinal barrier function and reduce inflammation.

Source: supplement with anywhere between 10-50 billion CFU’s daily

The Benefits of Oil Pulling

The benefits of Oil Pulling Gillian B

I am a Self-Care Teacher inspiring and empowering others to set themselves free using simple but powerful daily practices.

Age: 29

Skin Type: Dry

Hair Type: Fine usually oily roots

Skin Concerns: On the more sensitive side

Values: I am flexible, clean products from companies with heart is what I strive for.

The benefits of Oil Pulling Gillian B

Let me introduce you to a simple daily practice that has been used for thousands of years for the maintenance of oral health!

Oil pulling is the Ayurvedic practice of swishing high quality oil around the mouth as a way to remove harmful bacteria and keep it in tip top shape. Think of it as the new mouthwash.  Given that the mouth is the gateway to our body, it is important that we do whatever we can to maintain it. Like nutrients from food, bad bacteria can enter the blood through the mouth so it does make sense that lowering the risk could have an impact in other parts of the body. Many people claim that oil pulling has helped them to heal from everything from skin disorders, asthma, chronic headaches, inflammation, liver problems and hormone imbalances!

There are thousands of different types of bacteria in our mouths, they are the little guys that produce plaque! Oil pulling attracts and drastically reduces the amount of bacteria in the mouth that can cause common dental issues like gingivitis, cavities and bad breath.

The benefits of Oil Pulling Gillian B

How does it work?

Put 1-2 teaspoons of organic, cold pressed oil such as coconut, sunflower or sesame into the mouth. It does take a little getting used to, so just keep an open mind. Once its in there close your lips and make sure it doesn’t go down the back of your throat. Start to swish the oil in your mouth using a little force to pull it through the space between your teeth. The oils warm up and mix with the saliva, thinning it out and making it easier to pull. As the oil is swished around the mouth it begins to pull toxins from the saliva, the surfaces of the teeth, gums and tongue, making this a very detoxifying process!

Recent studies have shown the benefits of coconut oil in the prevention of tooth decay. Coconut oil is great because 50% of the fat in coconut oil is comprised of the bacteria killing ingredient called lauric acid. Lauric acid is very well known for its antibacterial and anti-fungal actions as it inhibits Strep mutans that are the primary bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Oil pulling should be done for 20 minutes to get the full benefit. Long enough to pull everything out but not long enough to reabsorb the toxins back into the body. So set your timer!

Oil Pulling Benefits:

  • Cleanses and detoxifies mouth and teeth
  • Helps prevent bad breath, gingivitis and tooth decay
  • Removes harmful bacteria, lessening the load on the immune system
  • Whitens teeth naturally without harmful chemicals
  • Relieves gum and tooth sensitivity

Some of the other reported benefits beyond the mouth include:

  • Migraine relief
  • Correcting hormone imbalances
  • Reducing inflammation of arthritis
  • Aids in the reduction of eczema
  • Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption
  • Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms

Oil Pulling Tips:

  • Its best to do this first thing in the morning when you wake up on an empty stomach.
  • I like to floss first, why not get the big stuff out of the way so the oil can do a deeper clean.
  • Most sources say its best to alternate oils to get the full range of benefits. However, my favourite is coconut oil.
  • You probably want to do it while you are busy with something else so you don’t think about it too much, I like doing it while I’m making breakfast, cleaning, answering back to emails or showering.
  • After you pull for 20 minutes, spit it out into a garbage or toilet. It will clog a sink quickly!
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to clear away any remaining oil.
  • Brush teeth after pulling or before if you don’t do it first thing in the morning.

Happy Pulling!

xx

Can You Fit Natural Products in Your Budget?

Can You Fit Natural Products in Your Budget? Emma Rohmann

Hair Type: Curly, dry (and red!)

Values: I prefer locally-made, small-batch products. Reduced packaging is an added bonus.

Can You Fit Natural Products in Your Budget? Emma Rohmann

The number one struggle I hear from members of my Green Product Forum about making the switch to healthier, greener, more natural products is time and money. OK, that’s two struggles. But they are more often than not connected.

It’s not surprising. Green products are notoriously more expensive than their conventional counterparts, at least when comparing the initial price tag in the store.

And trying to find healthier, greener products that actually get the job done? That’s not only a time suck, but also another money problem.

So what’s a time- and money-strapped, health- or eco-conscious consumer to do?

Start with your mindset.

Take a look at where you’re spending your money over a two to four week period. What are you prioritizing? What have you decided (unconsciously or not) is worth spending your hard-earned dollars on?

Now, decide how important it is to you to reduce your exposure to toxics, choose products that will last, or support a local business.

Is there a disconnect between where you’re spending your money now?

Chances are, there are at least some areas you can reassess in your budget. Take-out coffee, lunches or dinners. Impulse buys. Replacing a cheap gadget with another cheap gadget that will likely break after a few months. Even a utility bill that’s higher than it needs to be because you keep your home too warm or too cool depending on the season. These are all choices you make, just like the choice to invest in healthier products or not.

And it doesn’t have to mean you “give up” something. It can simply be a shift in the way you make choices.

Taking a holistic look at your expenses can help you understand whether there is room for some healthier choices. Sometimes it might take a little shuffling and effort, but if it’s really important to you, you can make it happen.

Afterall, you make those pumpkin spice lattes, Uber rides, take-out orders, or other simple luxuries happen. They all bring you joy, save time, or reduce frustration. That’s why you’re willing to invest in those things. Now you have to decide if you’re willing to invest in your health too.

Once you decide what’s important to you, then you can reassess how you spend your money. And if you truly want to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals in your home, it is doable on a budget.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you start making the shift on a budget:

  • Natural products often go further. I find that well-made products last longer than conventional brands – whether it be body care or housewares. So while the upfront cost may be more, you won’t have to replace them as frequently (just be sure to check the best before date on body care, as the preservatives aren’t as strong so shelf lives are often shorter).
  • Healthy products might reduce your medical bills. The ingredients in every day products are impacting our health. That is no secret. You might not be directly affected, or you could be severely impacted. Choosing natural products can help reduce symptoms and medical bills. That’s not a guarantee, but it is a potentially significant cost consideration. Especially if you suffer from asthma, autoimmune disease, or hormone imbalance.
  • Making is cheaper than buying. I’m the first to admit that I am not a DIYer. But I make my own cleaners (I make these 5 household cleaners in 5 minutes once I have the ingredients), lip balm, body butter, and sugar scrub. They’re incredibly simple and are much more cost effective than store-bought.
  • Try before you buy. If you have a friend who has gone down this path before you, bring some containers over to her house and test some of her products. Or ask the community in my Green Product Forum for recommendations. If you tailor your shopping list, it will be much easier to find replacements.
  • Buy less. If you’re investing in well-made products with a higher price tag, it can help you simplify and focus your efforts on fewer products overall. This will help reduce clutter, stress, as well as your expenses.

I hope this helps you with the initial mindset hurdle that many associate with choosing green products. Know that you’re not alone, but also that it is totally doable if you decide it’s important.

Heal Your Emotional Baggage with this Ancient Practice!

I am a Self-Care Teacher inspiring and empowering others to set themselves free using simple but powerful daily practices.

Age: 29

Skin Type: Dry

Hair Type: Fine usually oily roots

Skin Concerns: On the more sensitive side

Values: I am flexible, clean products from companies with heart is what I strive for.

Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga, has been practiced since ancient times. For those not familiar with Ayurveda, it is one of the worlds oldest holistic healing systems that goal is heal disease and imbalance by aligning your body with nature. One of the first practices prescribed is often Abhyanga. Abhyanga is a self-massage done by anointing the body with warm oil. (2)

There are many incredible benefits to this practice of next-level self-care mainly because it is a form of touch therapy. Interestingly enough, sneha is a Sanskrit word which means both oil and love, a knowingness of being cared for, cherished and comforted. The effects of Abhyanga are similar to saturating your entire being to the depth of your core with love. (3)

When practiced consistently it can have a very empowering effect on all levels of your being. While facilitating healing in the emotional body, this powerful practice also increases the flow of prana or qi throughout the body. However, these are just a few of the many amazing benefits of Abhyanga!

Here are some others: (1)

  • Calms and soothes the nervous system,
  • Enhances the ability to remove toxins,
  • Softens and reinforces the skin as well as helps restore color and vibrancy to the body,
  • Helps regulate sleep patterns,
  • Stimulates internal organs as well as increases circulation,
  • reduces the effects of aging,
  • makes hair grow thick, full, strong and luxurious,
  • benefits stiff neck and jaw,
  • enhances vision,
  • Benefits ligaments, veins and tissues,
  • Relieves exhausted feet as well as helps repair and rejuvenate stiff, rough feet.

Abhyanga has become such a huge, important part of my life. I have seen and felt the incredible shifts since practicing consistently. I’m so excited to share with you how to integrate this special ritual into your daily routine, and watch as your relationship with yourself changes as well as your skins appearance, and your overall health.

To get started you will need:

  • a towel that you don’t mind ruining
  • either sesame (better in cold weather) or coconut oil (better in hot weather)
  • a warm, relaxing, comforting space
  • a hot cup of tea or water
  • a small bowl to put the oil in

How to Practice Abhyanga:

Once your oil has been heated, get yourself comfortable seated on your towel. Be sure to create a warm, comforting space where there are no drafts or distractions.

Generally, you start with your scalp and head. As you begin, pour the oil over your scalp and be sure to use not only your fingertips but your whole palm as you massage the oil deep into your scalp.

Start to make your way behind your ears, your ear lobes, and face. As you begin to make your way to your arms and longer limbs be sure to use long, circular motions. In and around the joints apply pressure as you kneed the oil deep into the tissue.

In and around your torso start on your right side going up and around to your left side in circular motions. Move your way down your legs to your feet. Be sure to spend extra time on your feet as they carry you and your weight day to day giving them extra love and attention.

The entire process should take approximately 15-20 minutes, so don’t rush the process! The more love and attention you give to the different parts of your body the better you will feel!

Healing the Emotional Body with Touch Therapy

Yes, we can heal ourselves! Abhyanga can be incredibly powerful tool especially if you take the time to really nourish and nurture yourself. If you put love and intention into each stroke while practicing you can connect with yourself on a deeper level than you ever have before!

We happen to be living in a very exciting time on the planet. As we continue to grow and evolve, so has science. There is now research showing what is happening on a cellular level, which helps us understand why this ancient practice is so beneficial.

According to Ayurveda toxic emotions or ama are negative or repressed emotions that turn into stored toxins, which get trapped in the cells of our bodies. This helps explain why more often than not we tend to repeat the same unhealthy patterns, and behaviours throughout our lives, despite consciously trying to break out of these habits. (2)

When negative emotions such as anger, grief, jealousy, resentment, sadness, or trauma don’t get expressed they become repressed and stored in the body. Over time this can be very detrimental to our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. This alters the chemicals in our body which can create disease, compromise immune systems, alter mood, decrease energy, and block the flow of energy through our bodies. (2)

How does this happen?

We live in a world where many of us don’t feel safe to express our emotions, particularly the unpleasant ones. We prefer to only show the good ones, and even when we are feeling unhappy or dissatisfied we have a tendency to mask or hide them. Energetically, we stuff them down but we can only do this for so long before they start bubbling to the surface. When they do start coming to the surface it can be quite overwhelming. Imagine a lifetime of unwanted feelings, memories, and events all coming through like a tidal wave all at once?

But what can we do to release the pressure and pain stored inside and heal ourselves?

ABHYANGA!!!

Not only is it incredibly helpful during a time of healing or distress, but it would be wise to practice before you get to the point of overwhelm to help prevent an accumulation of ama.(2)

Abhyanga has been known to be one of the most effective touch therapies to help repair emotional disharmony. It has been proven in many studies that touch, hugging, cuddling, increases oxytocin and aids in healing. What is even more special about Abhyanga is it is a self-massage therapy, therefore, you are giving yourself the love, attention, and comfort that your inner child has been begging you for probably for most of your life. Practicing Abhyanga lets your inner child know that it is okay to feel those unwanted feelings, it is okay to express your emotions. This kind of touch therapy is used to gain access to your emotional issues no matter how unconscious or deeply stored they are. Dr. Pert who studies neuroscience and the relation to your emotions has found that one of the main entry points for repairing emotionally damaged receptors are found in the skin. The skin is, of course, easily accessed through touch. (2)

So there you have it! Not only is Abhyanga an incredibly sensual, relaxing experience that helps you feel and look great, but it helps heal you on all levels, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually!
