Benefits of Rosemay Essential Oil

10 Reasons You Should Add Rosemary to Your Beauty Routine

Read on to find out why Rosemary is such a superpower in the organic skincare industry!

In the cosmetics industry, this important component works it’s magic in more ways than one! It’s useful for toning the skin, increases blood flow, helps reduce puffiness thus, providing an overall better complexion. Depending on which products you use that contain rosemary leaf extract, you’ll be on your way to improved brain function, longer hair, maintained weight, and you’ll even be protected from UV damage. While these are just a few benefits that this ingredient has to offer, it does a lot more such as help fight cancer, improves asthma, and prevents blood clots. That’s 10 reasons right there!

Let’s take a look at a few products that contain the multi-faceted rosemary leaf extract:

1.Immersion Botanica – Rosemary & Lavender Cleansing Oil

  • Rating: 4.17 out of 5 Stars (18 Reviews)

Immersion Botanica Rosemary & Lavender Cleansing Oil

Leaves your skin prefectly hydrated!

I had never tried a facial cleansing oil before and I was sceptical. After trying this Rosemary and Lavender Cleansing Oil, I will never go back to commercial face wash products. It smells great, feels amazing and leaves your skin perfectly hydrated! Not too oily and not too dry. I love it.

Gentle but effective!

I use this as an everyday cleanser before bed. It is gentle but effective in removing basic makeup and cleansing my skin. It leaves my skin feeling clean and hydrated, unlike commercial products that left my sensitive skin feeling tight and red.

So soothing!

This is only thing I use on my skin after removing makeup before bed. It’s gentle and hydrating, and the scent is so soothing!

2. Lowen’s Natural Skincare – You Sure Clean Up Nice! – Face and Body Wash

Lowen's You Sure Clean Up Nice! Face and Body Wash

My face feels smooth for hours!

Great face and body wash. I’m always skeptical of cleansers that claim they’re good enough for body and face but this one really is. I hate when face wash doesn’t rinse off well or body wash leaves too much residue. This one does the job without the feeling of gunk left on you. I also have pretty sensitive skin (especially on the face) and it felt good going on and rinsing off. Like other Lowen’s products it has a fun name

Highly recommended!

This product is another example of how well Lowen’s does texture. I love how smooth their products are. Although this product is meant as a face/body wash, I only tried it on my face. It didn’t quite lather the way I expected but I didn’t care because…smooth! Like other Lowen’s products I’ve tried, the scent is au naturale and barely there. No sneezing or skin irritations, which is a big plus in my world.

A great “everything” cream!

Nice scent and lathers well, face felt nice, not too dry after

3. Good Karma Skincare – Lux 7 Four in One Face Cream

Would definitely recommend!

This face cream has a quiet fresh smell.
I like the feel of it on my face.
It leaves my face feeling smooth for hours.
Love-Love this glorious product.

Melts right in to my skin!

Really appreciate finding this product. I am cautious about what products I choose for health reasons. Good Karma four in one face cream has given me the moisturizing results and healthy skin that I have been wanting for a long time. I recommend the product highly.

Great moisturizer!

When used after the G.K. Toner, this is a great “everything” cream. I use it morning and night all over my face for smooth, refreshing, and glowing skin. A really great product!

Say YES To The Miracles Of Argan Oil

Say YES To The Miracles Of Argan Oil

You may have heard about argan oil, especially if you’re one to prefer natural skincare products. On beauty and personal care labels, you’ll see the ingredient labelled like this: Argania Spinosa (Argan) kernel oil.

The Miracle Oil of Nature

Argan oil: a rich, cold-pressed oil that is harnessed from the fruit kernel of the Moroccan Argan tree. It has many uses in cosmetics, working wonders for dry or aged skin, damaged hair or fragile nails. Regularly using argan oil for moisturizing your skin can reduce the amount of sebum, naturally suppressing oiliness and acne. That being said, it also helps keep your insides healthy! The edible version of hand pressed oil is a good antioxidant, it has hepatoprotective properties that can protect the liver and it can also prevent spikes in blood sugar levels.

If you don’t yet own products with argan oil, consider adding one of the following products in your skincare collection!

1.Immersion Botanica – Jojoba & Sea Buckthorn Facial Nutrient Serum

A little goes a long way!

I love how this product works on my skin. I pair it with the Fruit & Grains Facial Cleanser and I really like how it doesn’t leave my face oily–if I use the right amount! Honestly a little goes a long way so don’t use too much!

It makes my sking so soft and smooth!

I love to put this on anytime of day, it is not greasy or oily, and absorbs into the skin quickly! It makes my skin so soft and smooth! I use it every day.

My all-time favorite!

This is my all-time favorite moisturizer. I used to use coconut oil until I discover this. Heroin Hottie Balm absorbs much quicker and actually plumps my skin a little. I love it! Recommend it to anyone.

Lee-Anne H.

Without a doubt the BEST!

I have tried dozens of moisturizers over many years. Heroine is without a doubt the BEST product I have come across. Eliminates that dried out feeling after, after washing your face.

1.Shea Butter Market – Shea Lips

Shea Butter Market Shea Lips

Leaves the skin fresh and clean!

Great lip moisturizer. The dry cold weather gets me every year. This product helped soothe my dry cracked lips. Note: I’m a lip balm veteran – used blistex, vaseline, etc.

Felt like I was at a spa!

The citrus flavour is really great! A little bit thick in consistency but a little does go a long way. My only note would be that I do need to reapply a little more frequently then I do with something like vaseline.

So gentle and refreshing!

Great scent, but I had to reapply quite often.

2. Bee Real – Lip Balm

  • Rating: Rated 5.00 out of 5 (14 Reviews)
  • Certification: CertClean

Feels natural on the scalp!

I use this in both winter and summer. It keeps my lips moist in winter, no cracks and you don’t have to keep re-applying after a drink or food. Summer time protection from the sun is on point. My kids use them in winter too!

Debora A L.

I have sleep apnea and often wake up with dry cracked lips from using the mask. Since I’ve been using this lip balm my lips are always smooth and crack free. My fav is the peppermint.

Janice H.

I use this all year round; I buy a dozen at a time and have one at work, in the car, my purse, and every coat pocket! It’s the perfect consistency and not greasy. I love the peppermint

3. Om Organics – Lip Butter

  • Rating: 4.78 out of 5 Stars (18 Reviews)
  • Certification: CertClean

This is super hydrating and it has become my go-to for whenever my lips feel dry! The ingredients are all natural, and the effect the product has on my lips is amazing

Gentle yet effective!

It is a nice smooth lip butter. I only gave 4 stars because I found it still wasn’t enough to keep my lips hydrated in the winter and I still needed to moisturize them.

I don’t even need foundation!

I keep this at my desk to use throughout the day. It’s really lovely to apply (tastes great and goes on nice and smooth) however I don’t find that it lasts long enough for me.

Amanda F.

Below, we’ve listed a few natural products skincare enthusiasts can’t get enough of:

Facial Serum

Immersion Botanica Rosehip Facial Nutrient Serum

Leaves the skin fresh and clean!

I have used this serum daily and have seen an improvement in my complexion, reduced redness and sun spots. Knowing that the ingredients are good for my skin is important to me and I enjoy the fresh scent.

Felt like I was at a spa!

I love this serum. The rosehip is minimizing my wrinkles and giving my skin a lovely glow!

2. Always Bearded – Beard Cream Bergamot & Ylang with Distilled Cedarwood

Shaving Cream

  • Rating: 3.50 out of 5 Stars (10 Reviews)
  • Certification: CertClean
Always Bearded - Begamot & Ylang with Distilled Cedarwood

Feels natural on the scalp!

My hubby tried this product, and while he doesn’t have a beard, he’s used to using natural products which are often great on his skin but way to greasy for his liking. He was happy to report that this cream does the job without being super slippery .. just a great comfortable moisturizer without all the mess.

Gave my hair a natural look!

I really liked this product, especially in comparison to the next one. Firstly, I have a super curly and short beard. This cream has a splendid smell and a great texture to it. It doesn’t stick to your hand (like oil does), and yet it softens the beard a bit which is nice.

Mohamed F.

I typically use a beard oil with a strong scent (and my girlfriend likes). I’ve tried other products and this was the only one that did seem to leave the beard softer. I’m not sure if it was better than the beard oil, but it was a nice change. The only downside was I found I needed to use a lot of it to get it everywhere.

3. Massage Balm Purifying / Revitalizing

Facial Cleanser

  • Rating: 3.80 out of 5 Stars (5 Reviews)

Moor Spa Massage Balm Purifying / Revitalizing

I like the smell of this product a lot, but I find on my skin it comes out a little greasy! I have extremely dry skin on my hands (I used it for a hand massage) and it just kind of sat on top. I love the smell and how it melts, but it didn’t absorb much for me.

Gentle yet effective!

Not greasy as long as you give it a good massage. Great as a night cream!

I don’t even need foundation!

Tried the revitalizing balm. As the descriptions says… as soon as you touch the product, it melts into oil. It has a nice unique citrus-y scent, and leaves the skin a bit shiny. It absorbed okay for me, so it gets 4 stars. I’d recommend this balm.

Felt like I was at a spa!

Easy to apply. You could start to feel it working right away. It has a warming type sensation on your skin. Felt like I was at a spa. Easily washes off. My skin felt smooth and soft after. I am not normally a person who does masks but I really enjoyed this one. I also love the ingredients.

Beeswax: The Skin Protector That Works Wonders

Beeswax: The Skin Protector That Works Wonders

Beeswax: The Skin Protector That Works Wonders

Most of us who prefer natural ingredients know all about the work of bees. And although their most popular product is without a doubt honey, we’d like to put a spotlight on another one that works wonders for our skin: Beeswax.

The 100% natural fuel straight from mother nature.

Beeswax is an incredible natural substance and its use dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was the main ingredient in many ointments and creams used to treat burns, inflammations, heal bruises and even relieve joint pain. With all its rich protective properties, nowadays this special ingredient is present in cosmetics and body products due to its never-ending array of uses.

Beeswax body care products form a protective barrier that protect the skin without suffocating it or clogging pores, but rather allowing it to breathe while locking in moisture for reduced dryness. Being a good source of vitamins, this ingredient also helps with exfoliation and regeneration, offering your skin a truly rejuvenating look.

Below, we’ve listed a few natural products containing Cera Alba (Beeswax) that the natural skincare community seems to love:

Another super thick and creamy product from Lowen’s! Does a great job moisturizing all of my driest areas – heels, elbows, eczema … beautifully scent free.

3 Arrowroot Skincare Products You Can’t Pass Up

Arrowroot Article Featured Image

Arrowroot: the great moisture-absorbing ingredient

You may not have heard of arrowroot yet, but you will soon become familiar with the ingredient and its benefits. This herb is often listed as Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot) Root Powder on skincare product labels. Often used as a substitute for gluten in a variety of recipes, when used in cosmetics, arrowroot has moisture absorbing features that allow active ingredients to enter the first layers of our skin. This is why we also see arrowroot used in body powders which leave the skin soft and silky. It’s worth mentioning that many products that help with skin conditions like blisters, burns, and scabs incorporate arrowroot. Below, we’ve compiled a list of products containing arrowroot that PurPicks users can’t get enough of.

I can indeed recommend this cream, the smell alone is great. The cream is not too greasy, and easily applied to the beard and facial skin. Sometimes beard oil is too much, this cream you can rub between your palms and apply just enough!

David W

Really Moisturizing

My beard and neck area are always very dry. After using this beard cream, it really moisturized my beard and neck and made it feel very smooth. However after a while due to my eczema, my neck felt very irritated.

Good Karma 4-in-One Face Cream Review TBE

Sometimes when it comes to skin care, especially when you have acne prone skin, less can definitely be more. When my skin is acting up, I’ll generally scale back on the amount of product I am using until it calms down a bit and can handle more. The downside is that I feel like I am neglecting a step that my skin may need, so finding a product that multi-tasks, like this one from Good Karma Skincare, is a real plus!

I had the pleasure of using their Lux 7 Age Defying Four-in-One Face Cream and it hit all the right notes for me and my demanding skin!

Combining the best of both nature and science, Good Karma has completely simplified the beauty routine by taking FOUR products and putting them in ONE jar! Genius, right?!

This anti-oxidant rich moisturizer is designed to take the place of your day cream, serum, eye cream and night cream, and though it was kind of weird to just use one product (when you are used to using several!), I have to say that I loved the convenience of a singular product, especially on days when I was in a hurry.

But before I delve into how the product worked for me and my thoughts on it, I want to share a bit about how this ingenious product came to be…

Owner and holistic practitioner, Cynthia Ransom had a desire to create products that were convenient, affordable, luxurious, truly natural but most importantly would yield genuine results. She got her inspiration from a 68-year-old client (who happened to be a Native American Shaman) when she asked her what she used on her skin to achieve such a wrinkle-free complexion. The Shaman shared her beauty secret – a blend of seven natural oils and thus Lux 7 was born.

Using the 7 oils as the foundation of her products, along with her holistic science knowledge and experience, Cynthia worked with biochemists to perfect her nutrient dense creations as well as pioneering a new process she uses in all of her products called Bio-Fresh – a method which helps to preserve the integrity of the ingredients.

All ingredients used in Good Karma’s products are obtained from 100% natural and renewable resources, are cruelty-free and do not contain any toxic synthetic or harmful natural ingredients.

Now, on to my personal experience with the product….

First of all, this comes in 2 formulations – one for “normal-dry” skin and “normal-oily”. I chose the “normal-oily” as that would suit my skin best.

The cream comes in an airless container, which helps to protect the nutrient-dense formula from degrading from oxidation.

Besides the proprietary blend of the 7 (cold pressed, organic & unrefined) oils of Almond, Apricot, Avocado, Grapeseed, Olive, Sesame, & Vitamin E, it contains ingredients like Date Seed Extract to minimize the formation of wrinkles and protect skin from free radicals, Blue Algae Extract which helps to tighten skin, Sodium Hyaluronate to boost elasticity and hydration, and anti-aging antioxidants like CoQ10. Natural Grapefruit Peel Oil provides a light, refreshing scent.

The cream itself is light and silky and deeply hydrating. While it does go on a little “oily”, once it is absorbed, it is more matte. A little bit goes a long way too, so be careful when pressing down on the top to release product!

While I was using this (a few weeks), my skin was calm, soft and had a dewy glow. I noticed too that I didn’t break out, which always makes me happy!

Note: Their website does mention a warning that some people may go through a complexion detox when first starting to use this, especially if you have never used natural products, so if you have really sensitive skin, you may want to do a patch test or use this every other day to start.

All in all, I really liked this cream – the ingredients, the packaging (digging the whole airless container thing!), the multi-tasking benefits, the price, but most of all, I love how my skin looked while I was using this (I had to set it aside for now to test other products, but will definitely return to using it!).

One last thing I absolutely love about this brand is that they are not only a cruelty-free brand, but they give back to our animal friends through their “Beauty Feeds the Beasts” program – an initiative that provides meals for animals in shelters with every purchase of their products!

Price – $48

Ingredients – NORMAL TO OILY INGREDIENTS: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Ethyl Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Crithmum Maritimum (Sea Fennel) Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Ceteareth-20, Cetyl Alcohol, Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, Squalane, Cetyl Palmitate, Cichorium Intybus (Chicory) Root Extract, Octyldodecanol, Octyldodceyl Xyloside, Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Extract, Astaxanthin, Camellia Sinensis Leaf (Green Tea) Extract, Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower (Matricaria) Extract, Hydrolyzed Silk, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Oil, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Phoenix Dactylifera (Date) Seed Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Thioctic Acid, Ubiquinone, Methylsulfonylmethane, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hydroxide, Caprylyl Glycol.

HINT: Mountain air and meadow flowers are not actually used in your air freshener.

We’ve been sold on the idea of a clean smell. So we use air fresheners, room sprays, plug-ins, candles and dryer sheets to add fragrance to our home. But the ingredients used to create those “Mountain Fresh”, “Spring Meadow”, and “Lavender Vanilla” scents are not as natural as their names imply. Instead, conventional fragrances are created with synthetic chemicals, some of which are known or suspected carcinogens, hormone disrupters, and asthma or allergy-inducing chemicals.

Commercials even suggest that we can leave a month’s worth of take-out containers and old gym bags in a car – but it’s OK, because there’s a product that can cover up the smell. How did we get to a place where this sounds reasonable?!

What We Know

I tried to find what ingredients make up a “fragrance” or “parfum” in common household products. On Proctor and Gamble’s website (manufacturer of products such as Swiffer, Pampers, and Tide), there’s a document with 19 pages of chemical names that are used as potential fragrance ingredients. Spot checking this list, I found hormone disruptors, potential carcinogens, and allergens.

While present in small quantities, chemical fragrance often includes phthalates to help make them last longer and dissipate the scent into the air. Phthalates are a group of chemicals also found in PVC (like shower curtains and medical tubing) and some soft plastic children’s toys. In high doses, phthalates have been found to cause cancer and fertility problems in animal studies. The Canadian Cancer Society also reports a connection with hormone disruption.

In addition, synthetic musk compounds, which are found in fragrances of common household items, are persistent environmental toxins (classified by Environment Canada), and are showing up in fish and sediments in the Great Lakes.

To make things more complex, “scent-free” or “sensitive skin” on a product doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free from fragrance. Because of the other chemicals in conventional products, some fragrance is needed so the product smells scent-free. Note that essential oils are commonly used in “natural” and DIY recipes. These are more natural than chemical fragrance ingredients, but can also trigger allergies. Consider foregoing them too, or choose high quality organic brands and always test them first for allergies and sensitivities.

What We Don’t Know

According to Ecoholic’s Adria Vasil, of the 80,000 chemicals on the market for personal care products, only 7% have received toxicological testing. Obviously no company wants to release a product that causes noticeable reactions or harm, but there are less obvious impacts that take more time to show up.

Very little is known about how these chemicals interact with each other. But scientists are finding that, especially with hormone disrupting chemicals, even the low doses in our household products are enough to cause health concerns. We also often don’t learn of ecological impacts until it’s too late (like triclosan and microbeads).

What You Can Do

Many employers are starting to adopt a scent-free policy to promote a healthier work environment and help those with allergies. Even if you don’t have known allergies, consider doing the same in your home to help avoid the potential problems with chemical fragrances. Help reduce your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals by avoiding any product with undisclosed fragrance ingredients. These can be hiding in air fresheners (sprays, plugins, and candles), personal care products, cleaners, and laundry detergent. Train yourself to read labels – look on all sides of the package and go beyond the marketing hype.

Have you gone scent-free? What have been your challenges or wins?

Essential Oils Sabrina Zimmerman

Awhile ago, I wrote a post on my favorite skincare essential oils for acne (see here), and today I want to share a few of my favorite carrier oils for treating acne prone skin.

Before I dive in, I want to stress that what works for me and my skin may not work for you, so please bear that in mind. Always do a patch test to ensure you’re not allergic or sensitive, and give the product at least two weeks to see how your skin reacts.

The oils I selected are the ones that have not only helped keep breakouts and redness in check, but that have improved my skin overall. Some of these even provide some serious anti-aging benefits, so it’s a double win!

Rosehip Oil

I’ve heard mixed reviews on Rosehip oil – some people love it, some complain it broke them out or irritated their skin. For me, it has been a skin saver. Rosehip oil is high in Linoleic acid – an essential fatty acid that seems to be lacking in acne prone skin. It’s been found that skin that is deficient in Linoleic acid is higher in Oleic acid, which makes skin’s sebum thick and sticky which in turn clogs pores and causes breakouts. So, applying oils high in Linoleic acid, like Rosehip, should restore balance and help keep skin clear. Rosehip oil is also high in Vitamin A, which helps to improve skin tone, texture, and pigmentation, as well as Vitamin C to help stimulate collagen production. And the fatty acid content can help to regenerate skin that has been scarred. Since I have been using Rosehip oil in my skincare routine, I’ve noticed fewer breakouts, less irritation and my skin isn’t quite the grease factory it usually is.

Black Cumin Seed Oil

Another oil that is great for oily and acne prone skin is Black Cumin Seed oil, aka Nigella Sativa. High in vitamins A, B & C, as well as minerals such as Zinc, Calcium, Magnesium & EFAs, this oil helps to decongest and calm skin. Its potent antibacterial & antioxidant properties work to heal blemishes and repair damaged skin.

Chia Seed Oil

[…] As a food source, I’m a huge fan of these little seeds – I eat them every day, but let me tell you, as a skin oil they are a game changer! Besides being the richest botanical source of Omega-3 fatty acids found in nature, Chia Seed oil is high in skin protecting phytonutrients and antioxidants & has been proven to increase skin hydration, reduce trans-epidermal water loss and increase skin barrier function. The result (at least for me) is calmer, less red, less broken out, more dewy, plump and smooth skin!

Hemp Seed Oil

Dubbed “nature’s most perfectly balanced oil” because it contains all 21 known amino acids & its perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega 6 (Linoleic) to Omega 3 (Alpha-Linoleic) fatty acids, Hemp Seed oil is one of the best oils for keeping oily/acne-prone skin in check. Besides being a rich source of EFA’s, Hemp Seed oil provides a good supply of antioxidants, phytosterols, phospholipids, as well as minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, & Zinc. Another benefit is its ability to prevent moisture loss in the skin and to alleviate itchiness and irritation!

Other oils that are good choices for acne prone skin are:

Sacha Inchi –  High in Linoleic acid & antioxidants.

Hazelnut – Hydrating & balancing.

Evening Primrose – Calm & moisturizing for sensitive, irritated skin. High in GLA, which reduces inflammation in the skin.

Grapeseed – High in Linoleic acid, light & fast absorbing.

Jojoba – Mimics our natural sebum, balancing and calming.

Yangu Oil – Rich in EFA’s & antioxidants, light weight, yet very hydrating.{read my review on it here}

What are your favorite oils for treating acne prone skin? Have any of these worked or not worked for you?

Peace & love,

Brie xo
