Founder of Little Butterfly London - Gudrun Wurm

Little Butterfly London is an award-winning luxury Ecocert organic-certified skincare brand for both
mothers and babies created by Gudrun Wurm who, as a new mother, was inspired to create the
range to nurture her newborn son’s delicate skin, giving him the best start in life whilst making their
time together as magical as possible.

What inspired you to start your business?

My inspiration came with the birth of my son Lucas. I tried to find – and failed – to find products which
I felt were good enough to use on his sensitive skin which were organic, gentle yet highly effective
and beautifully packaged. I really wanted to create something to support that unique emotional
experience which goes with having a newborn and those precious moments that go with it.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

The most challenging aspects when launching the brand was to get it known to a wider audience,
which typically can only be achieved with strong marketing efforts, which often comes with a high
price tag. Smaller brands need to be creative as they can’t afford what the bigger or more
established brands can. We work closely with our retailers to help support them with the brand as
well authentic and engaged influencers who have been instrumental in getting our brand ‘out there’.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

One of our latest products is also one of my favourite products, the Wrapped in Love calming anti-pollution face cream for babies. It’s really the perfect answer for an urban family. The cream acts as a barrier protecting delicate baby skin from harsh environmental pollutants, while also soothing and calming even the most sensitive of skins thanks to its unique anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant combination of organic ingredients. It’s suitable for newborn, eczema-prone, ultra-sensitive and reactive skin, this is the perfect face skin cream for every baby (and even mum too!).

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

Little Butterfly London is created in London from carefully sourced ingredients throughout the UK and we ensure that only the purest, safest and most effective ingredients are used across the range. Our ‘hero’ product which is our Soft as Moonlight nappy changing cream actually contains many of my favourite ingredients. It contains 18 natural ingredients including calendula, meadowsweet, oat kernel extract and a series of precious oils and butters, all of which combine to create a comforting and healing lotion which will can prevent and soothe nappy rash. It also adds moisture to dry and sore patches of skin, which makes it the perfect handbag sized, go-to product.

Thank you Gudrun Wurm for sharing your powerful story behind Little Butterfly London.Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Robert Mars from The PÜRE Collection

#Founderspotlight - The PÜRE Collection - Robert Mars

The PÜRE Collection, is a successful award-winning, 100% Certified Organic (COSMOS standard, by Ecocert) prestige, gender neutral skincare brand.

The brand is set apart from others, as it is the only Certified Organic, Cruelty Free, PETA and Vegan brand using only rare and exotic oils, such as Rose Otto from Bulgaria, Sandalwood from Australia and Oud from Thailand, all formulated in-house perfectly presented.

Advocating healthy ageing, with a simple, but uncompromising approach in ethical skincare for the discerning, conscious consumer. As a brand, governed by the belief in being totally accountable and transparent with the majority of the ingredients being traced from earth to bottle.

What inspired you to start your business?

From its very root, the PÜRE Hotels and Spas in Marrakech, little retreats tucked away from the everyday hustle and bustle, were sanctuaries completely devoted to the senses, temples of wellbeing, dedicated to health, holistic healing and rejuvenation.

Guests requested the oils repeatedly, often long after arriving home. Recognising that they craved the luxury and skincare benefits of the exclusive signature treatments beyond the walls of their hotel & spa experience, The PÜRE Collection was founded.

In the process of creating and developing The PÜRE Collection, one of the founders, was diagnosed with Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia (COP) after walking past a public statue being cleaned with harsh chemicals. Furthermore, within a couple of months of being released from hospital, he was diagnosed with cancer. Can you imagine the devastation, the hurt and anger that this was brought about by the multitude of unnecessary pollutants and man-made chemicals abundantly found in our everyday lives? We just did not want, we HAD to do something.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Becoming Certified Organic to COSMOS standard by Ecocert was a real challenge, expensive and time consuming, but we felt it was worth the challenge as we felt we wanted the purity of our products to reflect our own personal beliefs for our customers.
Another challenge which we still face is the difficulty of finding authentic Certified Organic rare and exotic oils for our continuing range of products. Thankfully we now have a very trustworthy supply chain whom we are able to rely on.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

One of our favourite products is our Beard Oil -Private Blend as it took a very long time in formulating. We use rare oils that not only are exotic, but also work fabulously well together for their intended use. We are very proud that we are the only brand in the world that uses real, authentic OUD, making our beard oil not only the most expensive oil in the world but also one of the purest.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

We only use certified organic approved ingredients, some of our favourites are Agarwood (OUD), Rose Otto and Jasmine as the scents are far more genuine and realistic than those of lower quality oils and synthetically fabricated ones. Like when wearing your favourite party clothes or Sunday best, wearing these oils make you feel special. Why Certified Organic matters to us?
There are no legal standards for the use of the term ‘Organic’ in beauty products, therefore any brand can label their products, ‘organic’, even if it contains virtually no organic ingredients.

Being ‘Certified Organic’ by an official certification body ensures that a minimum of 95% of the ingredients must be organic.

Our Certified Organic ingredients are the most Pure and Premium available on the market.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

Our brand ‘s single-minded commitment to the purity of our ingredients and authenticity of formulations that is truly unique combined with 100% transparency. All reflected in the fact that we do not hide behind vague terminology as ‘fragrance, scents or parfum’ as many brands do. We list exactly what is in the bottle so you know exactly what you will be applying.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

Unfortunately, the public is susceptible to constant mis-marketing and vague liberal use of terminology such as “natural”, “clean” “green” etc. These words which are bantered around are greatly overused and have no value per se. They are simply buzzwords that suggest safety and purity but have no underlying authenticity.

Why have we gone through investing time and money to become “Certified Organic” as opposed to “Organic”?

There are no legal standards for the use of the term ‘Organic’ in beauty or skincare products.

Being ‘Certified Organic’ by an official certification body ensures that a minimum of 95% of the ingredients are organic, whilst being “Organic” only 1% of the total ingredients needs to be organic.

Being “Certified Organic” also means all packaging must be recyclable, all cleaning areas must be cleaned with approved organic products and an annual inspection of our full manufacturing process by the Certifying body is undertaken to ensure compliance.

It is a pity that many skincare experts, bloggers, influencers, beauty retailers and beauty e-commerce sites STILL do not know the difference between “Organic” and “Certified Organic”.

Our “Certified Organic” ingredients are the most Pure and Premium available on the market.

Thank you Robert Mars for sharing your powerful story behind The PÜRE Collection Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Julie Jirousek from Made Simple Skin Care

#Founderspotlight - Made Simple Skin Care - Julie Jirousek

#Founderspotlight - Made Simple Skin Care - Julie Jirousek

Made Simple Skin Care believes that what you put on your body should be safe enough to go in your body. That’s why all Made Simple products are certified organic in accordance with USDA National Organic Program standards as well as being raw, vegan, and non-GMO. Made Simple creates simple, honest products with only active ingredients – meaning no water, no fillers or preservatives, just pure effective product. As a company, Made Simple is dedicated to taking care of the planet by offering sustainable, earth-friendly products, a jar and bottle take back program, and minimal plastic use (all products are in glass).

What inspired you to start your business?

I was looking for a business that was environmentally responsible. When I came across Made Simple, a small, certified organic skin and oral care company I knew I found the right opportunity. Initially, I loved the idea behind Made Simple but quickly became passionate about the products as well!

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

We use no fillers, preservatives, or stabilizers in our products, so some of our products will occasionally melt in the summer. Although the melting does not affect the efficacy of our products, some customers are a little freaked out by that.
We feel strongly about NOT using any ingredient unless it has beneficial properties for the user. Luckily, most of our customers understand the nature of products that don’t use additives, but for customers new to this kind of product we try to get in front of the issue by being honest and letting them know the product may melt and why. Every product that may melt is sent out with an information sheet explaining why and how to take care of the product (btw, you just give the jar a quick shake and pop in in the fridge for a bit).
To be honest, some customers are totally on board and others aren’t. However, we stand behind our decision to keep our products as clean as possible even if it means losing a few customers.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

I love them all, but I think my favorite, favorite is the Chamomile Palmarosa Face Wash Oil. Is it terrible having a favorite child?!
My skin is very sensitive and I’ve suffered from rosacea and cystic acne for years. The thought of using oil to clean my face kind of freaked me out, but I tried it out. Instead of having a huge break-out my skin actually cleared up!
We use pumpkin and safflower oils as a base. Both are rich in vitamins (A and C). They are also rich in linoleic acid which helps unclog pores and diminish inflammation.
The essential oils are Palmarosa and chamomile. In addition to its heavenly scent, Palmarosa has antiseptic and hydrating properties as well as helping sebum production. And chamomile’s calming properties help reduce redness.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

My favorites change depending on what I’m working on. But I suppose I have some perennial favorites.
I’ll start with an obvious one: LAVENDER. I love, love, love lavender! My garden if FULL of it! Lavender is a work-horse essential oil – it’s good for so many things. Because it is known to soften lines, has anti-inflammatory properties, and is chock full of antioxidants, we use lavender in our Argan Geranium and Rosehip Chamomile serums. The antiseptic and antimicrobial properties add to the benefits of our Tooth and Gum Tonic, as well.
Coconut oil has been a revelation – I just keep learning more and more about what it can do! Of course, I knew it was great for nourishing the skin, but it also has antibacterial and anti-plaque properties which makes it perfect for our Mint Sweet Orange toothpaste. It helps reduce plaque buildup (so you don’t have to sit there forever while the hygienist scrapes your teeth!) and it attacks the harmful bacteria in your mouth leaving the good kind. What’s better than that?

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

One of the main things that drew me to Made Simple was the fact that all the products were certified organic, vegan, raw, non-GMO, and packaged in glass. We have taken the extra step to go through a process every year to certify that every one of our products meets the full USDA organic standard. We do this for every product so our customer know that, without any doubt, the Made Simple brand is synonymous with purity. As we continue to find new packaging options, we employ them immediately such as when we switched to metal caps instead of plastic caps. Yes, it cost us more, but we view the environmental costs of using plastic as being much greater. Somewhat unique to Made Simple, is that we offer our customers options in terms of what cap to put on their bottle. Since we haven't yet found an option to the plastic misters and pumps, our customers are given the option of metal cap or a glass dropper. There’s no need to get yet another plastic mister or pump if you already have one so these options have been working very well with our customers.
Taking the all-important extra step to be certified organic isn’t just about the ingredients that go on your skin. To us, it’s far more vast. To us, the organic journey begins with the farmers and the land on which the ingredients in our products are created. Those people, that environment, the surrounding environment should be protected from harmful chemicals and by purchasing only plant-based certified organic ingredients, Made Simple plays a crucial role in fostering a healthy environment.
Product Stewardship – Recycling is wonderful but at Made Simple we believe reusing is even better. And what better thing to reuse then our thick glass bottles and jars. While we certainly encourage our customers to re-purpose the glass bottles and jars for things such as saving seeds, propagating plants or keeping spices; we recognize that glass recycling isn’t a panacea since many towns don’t offer recycling. So, we encourage our customers to return the bottles and jars and we pay for the shipping. I believe that when consumers don’t have a choice available to them then the manufacturer has a duty to step-in and do the right thing; that’s what we do at Made Simple.
Along similar lines, we, too, reuse materials; specifically packing materials. Since we receive many of our ingredients in glass bottles (not to mention receiving the product glass bottles themselves) we end-up collecting quite a bit of packing material. Instead of discarding that materials, we reuse it to pack our own products. Yes, we do receive materials packed with bubble wrap and we reuse that only with very large orders. For 95% of our orders, we package using “re-purposed” paper.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

Myth: Oral care products have to “burn” in order to get your mouth “clean”. The truth is, that burn you are feeling is killing EVERYTHING in your mouth, even the good flora which helps fight the bad flora between brushings. Also, HOW you brush is more important than feeling the “burn”. Using a product that balances the naturally occurring flora in your mouth (as well as helping prevent plaque!) teamed with a proper brushing technique is all you need. We offer just the right balance with our Mint Sweet Orange toothpaste and Spearmint Clove Tooth & Gum tonic.
Myth: More ingredients means a product is more powerful. Nope! Don’t listen to those big marketing campaigns! A product doesn’t need a billion ingredients you can’t pronounce to be effective. Your skin knows how to take care of itself. You can help the skin do its thing by nourishing and protecting it (eating right and getting enough sleep help, too!) Over-correcting for a skin issue (e.g., over-drying acne prone skin, using a harsh chemical exfoliator) can often cause more issues. By simplifying what you are applying to your skin, you’re giving your skin a little help and allowing it to take care of itself without causing issues. The trick is picking a few ingredients that target a particular concern (i.e., dry, oily, sensitive, or mature skin). Organic, virgin, unrefined oils and butters along with a bit of organic essential oil is all your skin needs to do its thing.

Thank you Julie Jirousek for sharing your powerful story behind Made Simple Skin Care Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Karen Roche from Be Green Bath and Body

#Founderspotlight - Green Bath and Body - Karen Roche

This post may contain affiliate links. If you buy something through one of these links, we’ll get a small commission which helps keep us moving the dial towards clean beauty!

#Founderspotlight - Green Bath and Body - Karen Roche

Be Green Bath and Body, located in Massachusetts, makes pure, gentle and affordable artisan skincare products for women, men and children. Sensitive skin friendly, their cruelty-free products are hand crafted using the finest natural and organic ingredients to help you “Nourish Your Skin Safely”.

What inspired you to start your business?

In 2008 a close friend was diagnosed with breast cancer that was attributed to environmental causes. After she recovered, we began a journey learning about the products we ate, cleaned with and used on our skin. I quickly learned that there is much less regulation surrounding safety in the US than many other countries. I began making safer choices for my husband and 3 daughters and formulating non-toxic skincare products for them. Soon, I was helping to educate extended family, neighbors and friends and was inspired to expand my offerings to others. I found that most clean beauty products are expensive and I wanted to be able to provide products that last a long time and offer high value. Ones that not only worked but were affordable.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

I began my business slowly and spent over a year researching and formulating. There is a good deal of trial and error and it took many months to formulate high quality products with just the right ingredients. Learning how to create emulsions (like creams where oils and water are mixed together) was difficult but when it worked, it was so rewarding. I have always looked at my business as a journey. Each step along the way, especially the difficult ones helped me to grow and be able to reach for the next step. In business and and in life, my focus is to be happy and help others along the path of using safe skin care products. Becoming a large company and making high profits are not part of my mission. Yes, I need to make a living, but it’s more important to me that people use products that have ingredients that won’t cause them harm.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Of course, I have several! I love our Rosemary Mint Deodorant. I have been doing kickboxing for years and earned my black belt in krav maga two years ago. I always wear our Deodorant during these intense workouts and I never stink. It really does work! I feel like conventional deodorants have some pretty toxic chemicals and so many natural ones that I tried didn’t work for me. Ours contains baking soda and arrowroot and a smell-busting combination of essential oils along with cocoa butter. The other great thing is that you use a really small amount so one tube lasts about 6 months.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

My all-time favorite ingredient is organic rosehip oil. (This is the main ingredient in my other favorite product- Regenerative Rosehip Serum. See, I can’t choose just one favorite product!!) I love this oil for it’s versatility and effectiveness. Rosehip oil has such a perfect combination of vitamins A, E and C which help with collagen formation, skin tone and oxidation. Besides, it has some potent essential fatty acids and one of the highest concentrations of alpha-linolenic acid which helps with inflammation and itchiness. The great thing about this oil is that it works for all skin types from dry to aging to sensitive. It even works for oily skin and it absorbs really fast so your skin feels hydrated and not greasy.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

We want everyone to “Nourish Your Skin Safely”, which is our motto, and be green with their choices. We care deeply about this which is why we use only natural and organic ingredients. Our products are cruelty-free and Green America Certified. The majority of our products are also EWG Verified. To “be green” we also try to be as environmentally responsible as possible. We use some glass packaging, post consumer recycled plastic for our jars and we recently switched our powders to aluminum bottles. We do have a ways to go and we have some products used in the shower or that need to be squeezed that we don’t have a solution for. We hope that more sustainable options become available for small businesses like ours. I am always researching for better options. We do use recycled packing material when shipping, compostable shipping labels and we even found bubble mailers that are reuseable and made with 33.6% recycled materials. We also use minimal packaging for our products. For instance, we don’t sell our products in boxes that just end up getting thrown away and we do offer large refills for a few of the products like soaps, shower gels and shaving foam to cut down on plastic.

What are the reasons behind your commitment to safe skincare?

There are so many reasons why I am committed to formulating safe skincare besides what I have mentioned already. About 8 years ago, I found out that I carry the BRCA2 breast cancer mutation. In 2016, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. At the same time, I was walking this journey, I was also heavily involved in krav maga (a self-defense martial art) on a journey towards eventually earning my black belt in 2018. Both of these experiences were both mentally and physically grueling . I gave them my best effort, I worked hard and I survived. This, in many ways, mirrors my journey with Be Green Bath and Body. I am giving it my very best effort. I work extremely hard. I have survived and grown and I’m very proud of what I have accomplished!

Thank you Karen Roche for sharing your powerful story behind Be Green Bath and Body Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Trevor Steyn from Esse Skincare

#Founderspotlight - Esse Skincare - Trevor Steyn

This post may contain affiliate links. If you buy something through one of these links, we’ll get a small commission which helps keep us moving the dial towards clean beauty!

#Founderspotlight - Esse Skincare - Trevor Steyn

Esse Skincare is driven by a new understanding of the skin microbiome and probiotics. The products deliver live probiotics that complement the microbial ecology on skin to favour a diverse ecosystem that is healthy enough to protect you from pathogens and slow the rate of inflammation-related ageing.

Esse also feeds with prebiotic nutrients to select for microbes that improve the microbial ecology on the skin.

Using probiotics coupled with biotech actives, Esse is committed to showing an alternative to conventional skincare. The range is certified organic by Ecocert, carbon-neutral and vegan. The packaging is guided by Cradle to Cradle standards and constantly strives toward bettering its carbon footprint.

What inspired you to start your business?

As an organic chemist, I was asked to consult on a skincare formulation involving an extract of Kigelia africana. The formulation presented to me was so full of synthetic ingredients and it got me wondering how it could be better considered for human skin. I formulated 3 organic moisturisers which slowly evolved into Esse.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

When I first started back in 2002, organic standards for personal care were still in flux. The goalposts moved and other brands were claiming organic on conventional products. This diluted our efforts at educating our clients. Over the years, as Esse has shifted toward probiotic skincare and similar challenges have surfaced in that there are currently no standards outlining probiotic claims, making it difficult to stand out as innovative in the field when any brand that wants to ride the probiotic wave is making claims. A probiotic is defined as a live microbe that has a beneficial effect on a human. There are very few brands using live microbes.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

I think that at the time of its launch, the Probiotic Serum was way ahead of its time. It is still Esse’s highlight product and it continues to win innovation and efficacy awards. With millions of live, viable probiotic microbes per application, this product uses a system that allows us to deliver stable probiotics to skin with a surprisingly long shelf life. The microbes are held in a dormant state, in a suspension free from preservatives. On application, water in the skin activates them and they are able to multiply and shift the skin’s microbiome in a meaningful way.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

I would have to say that I am driven by research into the skin microbiome. I feel that the future of skincare will have to ensure that it protects the skin through microbiome support and probiotics and prebiotics are most effective routes. There are many impressive plant extracts that all have the power to improve skin condition and structure but without a healthy microbiome, inflammation and a compromised skin barrier will render any ingredient ineffective in the long term.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

In short, Esse Skincare aims to deliver more effective skincare, responsibly. We don’t make promises we can’t keep and we subscribe to external audits to retain credibility and trust from our clients. All our certifications are verified in partnership with credible and reliable organisations and require that we source responsibly and consider every input.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

There is a shortage of hard research on efficacy in the organic space. Clients want products that work and organic has not delivered in the past. We’re working hard to change that.

Also, don’t believe organic claims without substantiation – If it’s not certified organic, it’s not organic.

What does your day to day life look like as a founder and company owner?

Esse is based in the rolling green hills of Richmond, KZN, South Africa. I live in a small farmhouse with my wife Dee and some of our 7, extremely individual, kids – most of them have left home but there are always a few around. I love to find time for surfing, Ultimate Frisbee, yoga and squash. Loads of family time in our quiet neck of the woods. The lab is where I can bring to life the concepts that excite me though.

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Prudence Millsap from Beauty by Earth

#Founderspotlight - Beauty by Earth - Prudence Millsap

#Founderspotlight - Beauty by Earth - Prudence Millsap

Beauty by Earth is all about non-toxic and biodegradable formulations for your skin and hair that are effective and actually work.

They formulate with only natural and organic ingredients, are certified cruelty free and are all about products from and for the earth.

What inspired you to start your business?

After having our first kid, who ended up having some medical issues, we really decided to clean up the products in our house. To us, this meant toxic household cleaners, toxic personal care products and switching our food over to organic.

With the personal care products, the more I started researching ingredients, the more I realized just how much green-washing goes on in the industry. Brands marketing themselves as “clean” and then you read the ingredients and it leaves something to be desired.

There were a few good clean brands out there, but then the price point was cost-prohibitive to the average American.

So, we decided to start formulating products that were truly clean at a price point that was affordable to the average person. I surely didn’t know everything there was to know about business and logistics, so I dragged my long-time friend Ryan into the business and we co-founded Beauty by Earth.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

When you have never worked in manufacturing, sourcing and logistics, there sure is a LOT to learn in owning a physical products business. We have had all kinds of road blocks – space, money and people. We quite literally started with our garages being our warehouses and bootstrapping galore. But if you keep at something and have no plan B, you can make anything happen.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Everyone’s favorite from Antonin .B is the Ceramides Enriched Desert Serum. It works on all hair types and all you need is a few drops: for shine, conditioning and stronger hair (without the potential crispiness of proteins).

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

I would have to say Organic Aloe Vera. Its just so versatile and we use it in almost all of our products. It does wonders for skin and hair.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

We custom formulate all of our products with some amazing Cosmetic Chemists. If the ingredient is available as organic, we certainly pay the extra for organic and whenever we can, have our products certified organic as well.

It takes anywhere from 6 months to a year to get the product to where we want it. We have a group of product testers, that includes ourselves, who test everything and we keep at it until we are more than pleased.

We do not test on animals and are a certified Cruelty Free brand.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

We really hope to educate people more on ingredients to understand just what they are putting on their skin. It is beyond just branding a company as a “clean beauty” brand. There is just so much more to it. Clean beauty doesn’t have to be expensive. Expensive doesn’t mean it’s clean or uses better ingredients.

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Lena Sokolovska from Uoga Uoga

#Founderspotlight - Uoga Uoga - Lena Sokolovska

Uoga Uoga (meaning “Berry Berry” in Lithuanian) is a manufacturer of natural and organic certified cosmetics from the Baltics. All of the products are made by hand in small batches so that they are always fresh. Special local ingredients, such as berry oils and extracts as well as Baltic white amber, are used to enhance the effect of the formulae. Uoga Uoga is always cruelty-free and made responsibly.

What inspired you to start your business?

Having Uoga Uoga is the absolutely happiest time of my working life. Before, I used to work as a financial analyst and while I was getting a high salary and it was a great intellectual stimulus to my brain, I never felt I was doing something meaningful. So, one day I just quit my job with no big plans on what to do next. One night we were discussing with my friend if we could open some cafe or other business. Already then I was interested in organic food, more sustainable way of living and I was creating some cosmetics for my own use. That night we came up with an idea of offering our home-made creations to a wider public. Initial idea was to make fresh face masks with berries, hence the name “Uoga Uoga”, which means “Berry Berry” in Lithuanian. We still use a lot of berries in our products!

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

When we looked more deeply into the project of opening up our business, some serious hindrances occurred. In Lithuania, not like in some other countries, you can’t produce cosmetics in your kitchen and sell it- you need to have proper manufacturing facilities. Then of course recipe safety assessments, laboratories, and other regulations. Well, it helped that we were not afraid of hard work and we coped with all this stuff somehow. Sometimes, I still wonder how we didn’t quit in the beginning. When we set up the proper manufacturing, we started selling directly to our friends, friends of friends and in our online shop. But when we decided to open our first real shop, no shopping mall would take us. “We don’t know you and we don’t believe you can pull it through”- they’d say. Now, in 10 years we have 7 our own shops and some shopping malls call us themselves to ask us in. But that was not the case when we started.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

I daily use around 10-15 Uoga Uoga products, including skin care, hair care and make-up. I change some of the creams from time to time. Same with shampoos. But the product, which I can’t imagine myself without and that I’m definitely sticking with is our Mineral Foundation Powder “Linden Honey” SPF 15. My skin is a little problematic, so this foundation with white amber helps my skin tone to look more even without creating a mask effect. It looks totally natural (and actually is certified 100% natural) and it lets my skin breath thought the day. White amber powder is known for its anti-bacterial effect, so I believe that it helps some of my skin irritations heal faster.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

When you read some books about herbs, it may seem that every one of them is super healing, but it should be true that some of them are more potent than others. My personal belief is that the best healing berry is sea-buckthorn. I use it in the form of oil mixing it to other oils to help the skin calm down and I believe it helps small wounds heal faster. Best herb for me is calendula- I make my own infused oil and add it to salves or cold creams. Favourite oil for dry skin – unrefined shea butter. Of course, you need to mix it with other liquid oils, like jojoba- another of my favourites, for the ease of use, but it helps combat the dry skin patches and soften the skin.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

Our most important value is that we produce safe natural or organic cosmetics. Most of our products are already certified by Soil Association with Cosmos Organic or Cosmos Natural standards, including our makeup cosmetics, which is quite rare when we talk about decorative products. Not only do we select the best natural ingredients, we also ensure that our packaging is as sustainable as possible. We are switching more and more to glass packaging, when possible. We’ve also launched re-usable shampoo bottles in some of our shops and are now working on the refillable packaging for our mineral powders. Uoga Uoga is always cruelty- free: we don’t test on animals, 99% of our cosmetics is vegan, the only animal derived ingredient used being the beeswax in some of our products, but we try to switch to vegan alternatives in the nearest future. Uoga Uoga is always true- it’s not a business for us, it’s more of a lifestyle. That’s why we never launch products which may be commercial but we don’t believe in (like sheet-masks, which create so much waste). We also try to bring some positive vibe into our products, I’m sure you can feel our team’s character in our playful packaging and product names.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

I think telling that natural cosmetics is not as effective as conventional one is a myth of the past. Every year we find new natural active ingredients on the market that are really effective, and those are used in the natural formulae. Natural cosmetics is not just clay and oil anymore. We are out of the cavemen period and we venture with new but still safe innovations, like beta-glucans, hyaluronic acid, phytosterols and other great ingredients- all natural and allowed in organic certified products.

Many natural cosmetics companies don’t venture into make-up area. How do you manage to combine both skin care and decorative cosmetics?

Well, that’s true that natural make-up is totally different area. But we figured that most of the natural girls still want to put some make-up everyday or maybe on some special occasions. There’s no reason why not to try a safe and healthy alternatives to the synthetic make-up. That’s why we try to keep up with fashion and along with mineral powders, we also have some on-trend products, such as highlighters, glowy primer, micellar water and lips& cheeks tints.

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Gabriel De Santino from Gabriel Cosmetics

CEO of Gabriel Cosmetics

Gabriel started with a vision of natural beauty and has evolved with the philosophy of sustainability while remaining a constant in an ever changing, fast-paced culture. Experts in clean cosmetics, Gabriel Cosmetics is committed to sustainable natural beauty and earth-conscious practices, never compromising on ingredients or pigments. We are non-disruptive; our products are consistent, mistake-proof, and reducing the impact on our environment.

What inspired you to start your business?

We just celebrated our 28th anniversary as a company! Back before I founded Gabriel Cosmetics Inc. in 1992, I was an aesthetician and had many clients who were sensitive to chemicals and afraid to use any products on their skin. I searched for a chemical-free skincare line to use on them, and after months of researching ingredients and exploring different companies I realized that the skincare and makeup industries were missing many products that were truly natural and chemical free. It was important to me that I offer products to my clients that they could use safely, so I decided to create my own skincare line made up of all natural, vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free products with seaweed as the hero ingredient. I soon realized that although women were now able to naturally clean and heal their skin, they were continuing to cover it up with toxic makeup—that birthed the idea for my makeup line. It took years of research and lots of testing (on humans ONLY!) to find alternatives to each and every chemical ingredient, but I was determined to bring a fun and exciting line of color cosmetics to the natural products industry that would complement my skincare products.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Keeping up with the demand for the latest makeup trends has been challenging, as I am not willing to compromise on quality, holistic ingredients when it comes to our line—this means it can take us longer to launch the latest craze and trending product than other beauty companies. However, I have found that staying true to myself and our company’s philosophy has created tremendous brand loyalty with our customer base and I love the challenge of taking everything to the next level and introducing new products when its right. Without compromising aesthetics, functionality, or accessibility, we offer consumers earth-conscious and ethical options for their beauty needs—our makeup and skincare brands have solved a problem within the marketplace by providing affordable and results-driven skincare and makeup in the clean beauty space. We have really committed to being as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible in our practices, which can be challenging, but it’s definitely worth it—our recently revamped and customer beloved Gabriel Green program reflects that.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

While all of our products are designed to bring out a woman’s natural existing beauty and be mistake-proof—meaning each product is carefully curated so that even a beauty novice can’t blunder it—the 3-in-1 Multi Pot is one of my favorites. It’s made for the classic modern woman on the go, and its multi-use formula makes it the perfect item to toss in your bag for a weekend away, when heading to work, or to simply pare down your routine. It’s designed to give your skin a subtle and sun-kissed glow, and you can apply it to your eyes, cheeks, and lips for an instant flush of color and brightness. The gluten-free, vegan, and cruelty free product comes in six gorgeous shades that will complement any skin tone—the color starts off sheer with the first application, and can be effortlessly layered using your fingers to achieve the desired level of pigmentation and intensity.

When it comes to skincare, one of my favorite products to use personally is our Sea Mineral Hydra Mist. I spray it on between tasks, while traveling and flying, and really anytime I need a quick burst of freshness throughout the day. It’s made up of an exhilarating blend of active all-natural ingredients derived from the sea and land that remineralize the skin—like sea fennel, rosemary, aloe vera, chamomile, spirulina, and green tea—and it’s more versatile than you might imagine. The unique formula allows it to be used to prep and prime your face for makeup, to replenish and rehydrate tired skin, and to set your makeup by locking it in place.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

Growing up, I watched my grandmother make homeopathic cosmetics from seaweed, kelp, and other herbs that I often helped her gather at her home by the ocean in Mexico. As a naturopath and herbalist, she was knowledgeable of the many healing and revitalizing properties of ocean plant life—this has impacted the way we formulate all of our products. We use ingredients from the sea whenever possible, and you can find sea fennel as one of the most common ingredients in our skincare and makeup. Also known by its scientific name Crithmum Maritimum, sea fennel promotes anti-aging and the overall strength and luster of the skin. The beauty-bestowing plant is rich in minerals and vitamins A, C, and E, which give it antioxidant, conditioning, and soothing properties that improves skin’s radiance and tone, boosts collagen production, reduces fine lines, and speeds cell turnover. We use it in everything from our cleanser to eyeshadow and lipstick.

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Jennifer Waller from Celtic Complexion Luxury Artisan Skincare

#Founderspotlight - Celtic Complexion Luxury Artisan Skincare - Jennifer Waller

#Founderspotlight - Celtic Complexion Luxury Artisan Skincare - Jennifer Waller

Jennifer Waller began her career as a makeup-dazzled teenager, thrilled to serve part-time behind the cosmetics counter at Burdine’s department store in her home town of Miami. It took years for that happy magical pixie dust to turn to cynicism.

As she rose through the ranks – eventually becoming beauty director at Nordstrom – Waller happily guzzled every drop of Kool-Aid wisdom that the beauty industry put out: That more makeup is more beautiful. That movie stars really use the stuff they endorse. That the bigger the company and the slicker the packaging, the better the ingredients must be.

Meanwhile, her own complexion was driving her crazy. After every potion and powder in her arsenal failed to mask – much less cure – her rosacea, Waller in desperation went to a holistic esthetician who told her to chuck all her cosmetics and go on a far more natural skin care diet. Within a month she stopped looking like an Angry Bird.

If this were a movie, now would come the scene where the violins soar tremulously and a glowing light appears in the sky. Waller switched gears. She quit her job, got an esthetician’s license and was soon developing her own natural product line on her kitchen stove.

Celtic Complexion has since grown into a six-figure-a-year boutique business, based in the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, NC (although most serums and creams are still concocted in the kitchen.)

Every single thing she sells works on her own face. Sensitive skin gets TLC from raw materials that are certified organic, cruelty free, non-GMO and never sourced from China. And no, there are absolutely no celebrity endorsers on the payroll. Life comes full cycle, or maybe 180 degrees.

What inspired you to start your business?

Having grown up in the prestige beauty industry, I was granted an all-access pass to preview the latest beauty products from LA, NYC, London and Paris. Life was good, but I had a secret.

Despite the benefits of unlimited beauty gifts of the most sought-after products, I was hiding my own skin behind layers of foundation, concealer, and powder, and would never be caught without my makeup.

I suffer from a skin disorder called rosacea, which leaves the skin very red. Only my closest friends and family knew of my condition, because I was able to conceal it so perfectly. To the outside world, I had a peaches and cream complexion, but as soon as I took the makeup off, my skin resembled a sunburn.

It wasn’t until a chance encounter with a holistic esthetician, who suggested I abandon my current skincare regime, that I made the connection between the ingredients in the products I was using and my skin condition.

It never occurred to me the products I was using were harming me, I just assumed it was my skin. After all, these products were all recommended by beauty editors, celebrities and beauty docs, and they weren’t cheap!

I saw a difference immediately and I knew I couldn’t represent mainstream products in good faith any longer, so I started out on a new journey.

I was motivated to heal my own skin by the knowledge I acquired from this holistic esthetician. I became curious to learn more.

I quit reading beauty magazines and began to read books by others that shared her philosophy. It’s self-education vs. institutional education. These experts were not celebrities or doctors, they were nutritionists, naturopaths, aromatherapists, and natural healing experts.

I have read at least three books every month for the last decade on these subjects, and have amassed quite an impressive library. These authors have become my teachers and their words and findings have become the foundation from which I built my own company.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Once I garnered enough self-education and confidence in my formulas to actually start my own business, I was soon awakened from my idealistic slumber when faced with the task of marketing my products.

How could I share my passion, my message, my products with the world without an Estee Lauder budget?

Here is the irony. The very magazines and TV shows that send women the message they aren’t good enough, are the very same vehicles you need to get the word out about your products. It’s a catch 22. This game requires something I didn’t have, deep pockets. Very. Deep. Pockets.

Celtic Complexion started with a very modest budget, and a bare bones budget doesn’t leave a lot left over for marketing. I had to build this company one complexion at a time, and rely on word-of-mouth advertising.

We are conditioned to buy what we see most often, and I think that comes from us leading busy lives. We don’t have time to do research ourselves on what’s good for us, so we rely on the media to tell us what’s good.

The next time you wonder “if this is so good, why haven’t I heard of it before?” There are many, many wonderful artisan brands out there that have not gained national brand recognition. Open your mind to these smaller brands and be impressed on results, not advertising.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Celtic Jewel is my magnum opus. It was introduced to the line in 2016, and in that same year won the Kristen Arnett Best of Green Beauty Awards in the Best Anti-Aging Moisturizer category. In 2017 it won the Artisan Product of the Year Award by the Indie Business Network.

I created this product for women with sensitive skin who can’t tolerate harsh chemicals, peels or procedures but wanted similar results with none of the down time.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

Do you ever wonder how products are different, even though the may have similar ingredients? A quick glance at an ingredient list only tells you part of the story.

Here’s why:

1. Source of Ingredients – An artisan’s source of ingredients is held in as much regard and secrecy as the actual formula. Not all ingredients are the same. I’ve spent many months, sometimes years researching raw ingredients. The health of the soil, the care in which they are harvested and how they are stored or preserved is of the utmost important to me.

I can relate this to wine to make it easily understandable. You can take a wine type, say Pinot Noir, and it can taste very differently from each wine maker. The best wines (in my opinion) are the ones from boutique wineries with very limited runs.

I remember as a child, my mom had this very special stuffed shell recipe. Rather than get all her ingredients from the grocery store, she purchased the meat from a butcher in a neighboring town, the tomatoes from the local farmers market, and the pasta from a specialty Italian market that hand made their own pasta. The result was sublime, and no matter how hard I tried, I could never replicate her recipe because my ingredients were purchased from a big box grocer.

I purchase the majority of my raw ingredients for Celtic Complexion products from small businesses who manufacture in micro batches, ensuring the freshest ingredients.

2. Attention to Detail – When you get a Celtic Complexion product, it’s my hands that lovingly create it. I believe strongly that is what you are paying for, the “artists’ hands”.

Details such as how the product is poured, how it sets up, and how it’s packaged and shipped. I want every stage of the product to inspire and delight you, from the time you open the package, to when you place it on your vanity, to when you first place the luxurious creme between your fingers.. it has to be “an experience” that you won’t forget.

As the saying goes, the devil is in the details.

3.Time – It takes a full six months for a Rolls Royce to be made. It takes 14 hours to assemble a Ford Edge.

A mass marketed creme is made in minutes, in large vats, with the push of a button. The production time of a Celtic Complexion product can take from three hours to three days.

4. Formula – An ingredient list on the back of a bottle does not reveal the actual recipe or formula. It does not reveal actual percentages of ingredients either. Green washing is a common practice in our industry. It means when a company puts a wonderful ingredient in a product, but in minuscule amounts so they can legally advertise it on the bottle, but there isn’t enough of the ingredient to actually be effective.

I liken a cosmetic formula to a secret family recipe that has been passed down for generations. As in the example above, when cooking, you can have the same two people make a recipe but it can taste very different. The experience, expertise and intuition of the chef can turn a simple egg into a masterpiece.

As an artisan, part of my process is to honor my intuition when working with raw ingredients, and know when to accelerate a formula, and when to call it done.

An artisan’s formula and process is their fingerprint, and theirs alone.

5.Intention- I call it the “x” factor. The emotions, feelings and settings for which a product is created has a lot of influence on how the product will perform. In other words, I have to be in a specific mindset to “create” because it effects the end result. In addition to the actual product creation, there are many rituals which we follow before, during and after which charge and imprint each product.

I believe this is why our products have such a profound effect.

I feel it’s so important to educate you about my process, so you can make an educated decision when comparing products. I’ll leave you with this little story about Pablo Picasso.

Legend has it that Pablo Picasso was sketching in the park when a bold woman approached him.

“It’s you — Picasso, the great artist! Oh, you must sketch my portrait! I insist.”

So Picasso agreed to sketch her. After studying her for a moment, he used a single pencil stroke to create her portrait. He handed the women his work of art.

“It’s perfect!” she gushed. “You managed to capture my essence with one stroke, in one moment. Thank you! How much do I owe you?”

“Five thousand dollars,” the artist replied.

“B-b-but, what?” the woman sputtered. “How could you want so much money for this picture? It only took you a second to draw it!”

To which Picasso responded, “Madame, it took me my entire life.”

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Rose Hoeppner from Midori Family

This post may contain affiliate links. If you buy something through one of these links, we’ll get a small commission which helps keep us moving the dial towards clean beauty!

CEO of Midori Family

Midori Family offers natural, organic and unique products, researched based skin and hair care products to provide safer alternatives, and the enhancement of nourishing and luxurious feel.

What inspired you to start your business?

I worked in the heavy chemical industry as a chemical engineer for years. This provided me with a wide range of experiences in research and development, manufacturing and project management. It exposed me to numerous sectors like batch processing, emulsion and formulation developments, environmental science and technology, glass technology, batch processing, photovoltaic science, food packaging chemical manufacturing and much more. It provided me with the skillset to further follow my passion in the creation of innovative, cleaner and better products. I saw how harsh chemical and toxic chemicals have a lifelong and devastating impact on not only communities, families within different areas of life, and cascading down to even pets. I had a burning desire to offer a better, safer, unique and fun line of products while providing absolute luxury and addressing/solving a problem.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Educating people is one of the big challenges. Coupled with the frequency of poor information that circulates in various platforms, I often find that some of the skin care routine or even hair care routine /method used by consumers are responsible for some of their skin and health problems. I continually work hard to bring awareness and solutions that help alleviate such issues through provision of better education, ingredients discussion and personal care regime.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

One of my favorite oils is the Midori Family Face & Body Oil. I absolutely love using raw, pure organic botanical oils. I do see a difference in the level of purity for many products out there and I wanted to offer the highest purity of oils at an affordable price making it accessible to everyone while not compromising my vision of highest quality. Midori Family Face and Body oil is an EWG verified product. I particularly love how dynamic this oil is. It can be used in several ways; for examples, in an oil cleansing technique, and also as a final step for daily skin rejuvenation. Additionally, this botanical oil bliss for skin is rich in naturally occurring vitamin E.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

I love dynamic oils. Some of my favorite oils, include Tamanu oil, rosehip, neem oil, blue tansy oil, borage, babassu oil and of course coconut oil. I do have a wide range of favorite oils that i can’t possibly list all. It’s exciting how different oils each possess something unique about them making a more powerful combo when mixed with other oils. I particularly love using sunflower oils because it does not clog pores and makes a perfect carrier oil for many other oils.

Additionally, the combination of Orange Oil, Rosehip and baobab Oil provides the effect of vitamin c benefits. Rosehip, and tamanu oil are oils that help repair skin damage, fade scars and offer skin renewing benefits. Babassu and rosehip oil help boost elasticity and firmness. They also protect the skin from aging effects of free radicals. They are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and have the combined effect of renewing skin cells. It is no wonder this is a favorite to many of our customers.

It solves issues relating to skin moisture, great for those with sensitive skin and provides a natural glow. It is great for all skin types: dry or oily skin. It does not clog pores.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

My background in research and development, innovative science and technology further honed my skills enabling me to understand, develop products while looking at the fundamental components needed to solve a problem or address an issue. With added bonus of more and more nourishing qualities, a luxuriously effective product was born. We love the ethos of our company because I can boldly say our company has the highest collective group of organic based ingredients when compared to others in the market as a whole. We also carefully screen ingredients, and have our own “DO NOT USE” ingredient list to ensure pristine product safety and benefits. We use fair trade ingredients, raw virgin, steam distilled essential oils, CO2 Extract for botanical flowers, non-GMO,certified organic ingredients. We are really proud of our product line.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

There is a myth that both facial and body oil can’t penetrate the skin and that only water based moisturizers are beneficial for the skin. Skin oils are rich in omega fatty acid. Fatty acids are able to pass through the lipid layer of our skin as good as a moisturizer. This is why you see the effects of wound healing oils like neem oil, scar reduction oils like tamanu and rosehip. These oils offer renewing effects while helping seal in moisture to prevent dehydration of the skin and protect against moisture loss.

Secondly, one of the myth is that people with acne prone skin./oily skin shouldn’t use skincare oils. Instead, they are advised to use alcoholic cleansers and toners. The issue with oily skin stems from the inability to achieve a moisture balance. When starved of adequate moisture, it over-reacts by producing more sebum generating such oily skin effect to try and account for the loss. The use of facial oils helps to bring back balance to the sebum production leading to a healthier skin surface from the plant compounds and associated properties.

Does purity level and quality level of ingredients matter?

Yes, they do. To full get the benefits of these wonderful oils, it should be experienced at its pristine condition. Our oils does not contain fillers, mineral oils, silicone oils and it’s not a watered down kind of product. We certainly want people to enjoy the true essences and powerful performance of essential and botanical oils. As if dripping from a plant directly into a glass beaker at its finest!

Thank you Rose Hoeppner for sharing your powerful story behind Midori Family Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!
