CEO of Midori Family

Midori Family offers natural, organic and unique products, researched based skin and hair care products to provide safer alternatives, and the enhancement of nourishing and luxurious feel.

What inspired you to start your business?

I worked in the heavy chemical industry as a chemical engineer for years. This provided me with a wide range of experiences in research and development, manufacturing and project management. It exposed me to numerous sectors like batch processing, emulsion and formulation developments, environmental science and technology, glass technology, batch processing, photovoltaic science, food packaging chemical manufacturing and much more. It provided me with the skillset to further follow my passion in the creation of innovative, cleaner and better products. I saw how harsh chemical and toxic chemicals have a lifelong and devastating impact on not only communities, families within different areas of life, and cascading down to even pets. I had a burning desire to offer a better, safer, unique and fun line of products while providing absolute luxury and addressing/solving a problem.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Educating people is one of the big challenges. Coupled with the frequency of poor information that circulates in various platforms, I often find that some of the skin care routine or even hair care routine /method used by consumers are responsible for some of their skin and health problems. I continually work hard to bring awareness and solutions that help alleviate such issues through provision of better education, ingredients discussion and personal care regime.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

One of my favorite oils is the Midori Family Face & Body Oil. I absolutely love using raw, pure organic botanical oils. I do see a difference in the level of purity for many products out there and I wanted to offer the highest purity of oils at an affordable price making it accessible to everyone while not compromising my vision of highest quality. Midori Family Face and Body oil is an EWG verified product. I particularly love how dynamic this oil is. It can be used in several ways; for examples, in an oil cleansing technique, and also as a final step for daily skin rejuvenation. Additionally, this botanical oil bliss for skin is rich in naturally occurring vitamin E.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

I love dynamic oils. Some of my favorite oils, include Tamanu oil, rosehip, neem oil, blue tansy oil, borage, babassu oil and of course coconut oil. I do have a wide range of favorite oils that i can’t possibly list all. It’s exciting how different oils each possess something unique about them making a more powerful combo when mixed with other oils. I particularly love using sunflower oils because it does not clog pores and makes a perfect carrier oil for many other oils.

Additionally, the combination of Orange Oil, Rosehip and baobab Oil provides the effect of vitamin c benefits. Rosehip, and tamanu oil are oils that help repair skin damage, fade scars and offer skin renewing benefits. Babassu and rosehip oil help boost elasticity and firmness. They also protect the skin from aging effects of free radicals. They are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and have the combined effect of renewing skin cells. It is no wonder this is a favorite to many of our customers.

It solves issues relating to skin moisture, great for those with sensitive skin and provides a natural glow. It is great for all skin types: dry or oily skin. It does not clog pores.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

My background in research and development, innovative science and technology further honed my skills enabling me to understand, develop products while looking at the fundamental components needed to solve a problem or address an issue. With added bonus of more and more nourishing qualities, a luxuriously effective product was born. We love the ethos of our company because I can boldly say our company has the highest collective group of organic based ingredients when compared to others in the market as a whole. We also carefully screen ingredients, and have our own “DO NOT USE” ingredient list to ensure pristine product safety and benefits. We use fair trade ingredients, raw virgin, steam distilled essential oils, CO2 Extract for botanical flowers, non-GMO,certified organic ingredients. We are really proud of our product line.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

There is a myth that both facial and body oil can’t penetrate the skin and that only water based moisturizers are beneficial for the skin. Skin oils are rich in omega fatty acid. Fatty acids are able to pass through the lipid layer of our skin as good as a moisturizer. This is why you see the effects of wound healing oils like neem oil, scar reduction oils like tamanu and rosehip. These oils offer renewing effects while helping seal in moisture to prevent dehydration of the skin and protect against moisture loss.

Secondly, one of the myth is that people with acne prone skin./oily skin shouldn’t use skincare oils. Instead, they are advised to use alcoholic cleansers and toners. The issue with oily skin stems from the inability to achieve a moisture balance. When starved of adequate moisture, it over-reacts by producing more sebum generating such oily skin effect to try and account for the loss. The use of facial oils helps to bring back balance to the sebum production leading to a healthier skin surface from the plant compounds and associated properties.

Does purity level and quality level of ingredients matter?

Yes, they do. To full get the benefits of these wonderful oils, it should be experienced at its pristine condition. Our oils does not contain fillers, mineral oils, silicone oils and it’s not a watered down kind of product. We certainly want people to enjoy the true essences and powerful performance of essential and botanical oils. As if dripping from a plant directly into a glass beaker at its finest!

Thank you Rose Hoeppner for sharing your powerful story behind Midori Family Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Lisa Brill from Qet Botanicals

Needed, developed, shared, and founded by a woman with sensitive skin, hormonal acne, Rosacea, and auto immune issues, Qet Botanicals is all about clean, healthy, cruelty-free, plant-based, and non-toxic ingredients. Made in fresh batches and shared directly from their Skin Studios to your doorstep, there’s something for everyone. Hair, body, skin, and care products with a conscious. Qet Botanicals is an EWG Verified brand and has won over a dozen awards for their treatments. An indie brand with a heart, to Qet it’s about the natural actives from nature and what they bring to the table ~ not only when it comes to the foods that nourish our bodies, but also through the select botanicals that feed our skin. Ancient treatments and proven, plant actives are curated in a fresh and modern way to share their passion for clean ingredients and what they stand for: authenticity, effectiveness, and health.

What inspired you to start your business?

After dealing with acne, Rosacea, auto immune, sensitive skin, breakouts, wrinkles, oily skin, and dry skin, and other hair and health changes all in a short amount of time, I knew I had to find something that I enjoyed using, was safe, and that could help my skin calm and clear without upsetting my hormones. You could say that it was my skin that made me do it.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Qet Botanicals was launched in April of 2013. We’re basically a word-of-mouth business and love to work directly with our customers. Skincare is a sensitive subject, sometimes literally!, so keeping our doors of communication open makes sense for all of us. With time, we notice that natural ingredients can chance with the seasons ~ their natural aromas, texture, and even color can change, but their performance remains the same. Because we freshly batch our own proprietary treatments, we sometimes notice this difference in our treatments. We’ve educated our customers that it’s the nature of being natural… authentic ingredients change, synthetics do not. Additionally, a synthetic ingredient, even a safe synthetic ingredient, cannot take the place of an organic and natural plant active or phytonutrient. And this is what we love about our truly natural treatments.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

One of our customer faves, as well as ours!, is our Lavish Serum Salve. It’s won multiple awards and is that very special product you’d want to take with you if you were ever stranded on a deserted island. It’s the only salve we make and it includes some of our favorite oils from our facial serums. Originally meant to help protect the skin in frigid temperatures, it’s become a an eco-friendly, multi-use treatment. It can be loved as a favorite weekly hydrating mask, and can be used nightly as a leave on treatment for the face around the eyes, nose, lips and neck. It’s meant to be used lavishly, so even the hands, elbows and feet benefit from it. It’s fresh, it’s been helpful to those with skin sensitivities and rashes, it’s hydrating, and it’s meant to be used lavishly and loved equally on the face as well as anywhere the skin needs that little extra pampering. It’s very concentrated so just a tiny amount melted between the fingertips and applied where desired is all that is needed. It’s lavish, indeed. 🙂

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

Letting you know what is our favorite ingredient is like asking us who is our favorite child or favorite pet… we sincerely love them! It’s because of their high-performing and proven results, and the joy they bring to using them, is why we include them in our proprietary treatments.

If we had to pick just two, it would be our rosehip seed oil which is derived from both the seeds and the fruit of the rosehips. Rather than use a synthetic vitamin as a vitamin serum, or something that oxidized right away, our use of rosehip replaces the toxic and synthetic version of Retinol and its counterparts.

Another favorite? Broccoli seed oil. Loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, we love it in our face and hair treatments. Silicones are found in so many face and hair products, and silicones can clog pores, increase breakouts, and even make hair brittle. We blend broccoli seed oil with other botanical oils and it’s like nature’s version of silicone… without any plastics, polymers, or harmful ingredients.

Thyme, turmeric, cranberry seed oil, jasmine, raspberry seed oil ~ these are a few of our other favorites because of their unique phytonutrients they bring to our skin strengthening and performing abilities.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

Because we are completely and wholly involved in our development, formulation, and fulfillment processes, we verify, hand-select, and curate our treatments from start to finish. As a part of the EWG Verified program, not only are our ingredients scrutinized for safety, allergens, toxicity, hormone disruptors, and for our overall health, the percentage of active ingredients are also reviewed, as well as our manufacturing practices. We’re consistently reviewing data to ensure that individual ingredients are included in the freshest way and in the safest amounts. We choose organic ingredient whenever possible, and work with ethical farmers and suppliers to give us ingredients that are wildcrafted, sustainable, cruelty free, free of residual chemicals, and are free of GMOs. We’ve developed a special box to house many of our facial serums that reduces waste, ink, and environmental impact. Our labels are also tree free, and we’ve received a sustainability award for these efforts. In addition to being a part of EWG Verified and Skin Deep, we’re also part of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, we’re a Green America Certified Business. It takes us between 12-18 months to bring a product to market, and we only test on ourselves and friends and family ~ never on our furry friends.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

We hear often from our customers that they thought a previous product was safe, or clean, or free of synthetics because it says it’s natural on the label. Many time a product will include natural ingredients, but it may also include a handful of synthetics. If a label states “fragrance” on its label, it could literally have hundreds of ingredients wrapped within the word “fragrance” without having to disclose each ingredient individually. Using lab manufactured ingredients to mimic a natural ingredient may mean that the ingredient may look or feel like the real ingredient, but it cannot contain the same number of constituents that a real oil, botanical, or plant active contains. Then other artificial ingredients are often incorporated to try to improve the performance of the synthetic. The end result is an artificially manufactured product that may have some natural ingredients in it, but still may contain harmful or toxic additives. In the natural beauty world, many times the results continue to improve with time, just like when we improve our eating habits or our exercise routine. We’ll see the great results continue to flourish with time.

Do you have something additional to share with the community?

As a gal with a handful of health, skin, and hormonal problems, I knew I had to do something to help my condition. Between by endocrinologist, my dermatologist, my enzyme specialist, and my allergist, my overall health was not happy and I didn’t feel comfortable taking oral and topical prescriptions.

As soon as I started to develop a small amount of my own treatments, and when I took matters into my own hands, I saw and felt the change for the better in my skin, hair, and in my body as a whole.

If you’ve had similar situations, and we know that many of you have because we hear it all of the time, let us know and let us guide you to ways that you can naturally achieve your best health ~ without the use of anything artificial or harmful.

From lip balms, to deodorants, to face, body and hair treatments, even aromatherapy… we have something for everyone in the family.

We’re a family, too, and we’re here to help you along on your clean journey.

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Reycel Baysa from Organic Fiji

#Founderspotlight - Organic Fiji - Reycel Baysa

Organic Fiji offer a pampering whole body wellness line inspired by ancient Fijian traditions. Never compromising on purity or performance, they create artisan personal care products extracted from nature’s organic apothecary for the ultimate head-to-toe luxuriation.

Indulge in nourishing lotions, cleansing soaps, multi-functional oils, invigorating body scrubs and quenching lip balms. All powered by the active ingredients – raw, organic, extra virgin, cold pressed coconut oil and pure essential oils.

Clean, biodegradable, wilderness/marine safe, vegan, cruelty free, allergy friendly and packed full of exotic island vibes. This responsibly sourced and ethically produced line will nourish and holistically heal your whole body as well as invigorate your senses.

Dedicated to product purity, Organic Fiji is proud to have been USDA certified organic for over 13 years. Only the cleanest of plant powered ingredients pass their high standards. Safe for people and the planet!

What inspired you to start your business?

Organic Fiji products represent a simpler way of life to me. The products are all about people being able to feel healthier and more confident in their own skin, using the gifts that nature offers rather than feeling like they need to use toxic chemicals. I am passionate about sharing that feeling and my love for the products fuels me to keep working hard for the customers.

The roots and inspiration of these products run deep. I grew up on a small island, a haven of tropical natural beauty. The coastline of the island is skimmed by gentle coves, powder white sand beaches and stunning coral reefs. There are coconut trees everywhere and traditions that are in harmony with nature. The coconut is part of our island culture’s daily routines – coconut milk for cooking, coconut oil for skin and hair treatments, fresh coconut juice for drinking and fresh coconut meat as a delicious snack.

I want to bring the island traditions of holistic wellness to a market that is ready for mindful change, ready to make healthier decisions for themselves and ready to commit to cleaner (and greener!) beauty that is safer for them, their families and the planet.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

We work hard to flush green washing out so it doesn’t stop us producing products at the standards we believe in. I make sure that I, and all our team, are educated on ingredients, real certifications and solid facts rather than marketing terms alone. This prevents us from getting caught up in green washing. We use vendors that have a long history of sourcing organic ingredients, have integrity in their work, provide us documentation for certifications and allow us to ask questions until we are comfortable. I really believe in knowledge translating to power, so we are dedicated to constantly learning how we can improve our products with cleaner, less toxic ingredients. We also enjoy connecting with our customers big and small, to be transparent, share our knowledge and combat any green washing myths.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

It's so hard to pick a favorite product because I really enjoy them all. But I think in joint first place are the scrubs and the oils. I have super thick and curly hair, it can be very hard to manage, but the Organic Fiji oils have changed that. I cannot live without it. The oil makes my hair soft, manageable and healthy. It has even saved my hair from being permanently damaged from harsh treatments, and it encourages it to grow quickly too! After growing up with ‘hair-anxiety’ (it’s a real thing!) I have finally, with the help of these oils, grown to embrace and love my naturally curly hair.

Organic Fiji Scrubs are my lifesaver too. I am a typical South-Pacific woman who would love her skin to be lighter. It’s built into our culture unfortunately. When I was younger I even tried using whitening products. One day Karma hit me, I woke up with itchy skin and noticed I had a rash all the way from my arms to my legs. A dermatologist told me I had a really bad allergic reaction from the products because they were full of chemicals. She gave me some allergy medication and the rash started to vanish. But the saddest part is that the scars were still visible, a valuable reminder to not only embrace my natural skin, but also to make a commitment to myself to use products that are gentle, allergy friendly and organic. After formulating our organic body scrubs, I started using the Lemongrass Tangerine variation daily and after just a few uses, I noticed the scars on my arms and legs were getting lighter. After several months, all my scars had vanished and I am so happy. What a valuable lesson to learn about ingredients and confidence too.

Overall, I love Organic Fiji products because they changed my life and how I feel in my own skin. The products give me more confidence in my natural self and that’s what I hope to inspire in others too. Without the use of gimmicks or greenwashing, just simple island techniques with beautiful aromas, clean ingredients and the reassurance of organic certifications.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

My favorite ingredient is of course our active ingredient – raw coconut oil! It just has so many great holistic uses, not just in beauty regimes but in general health and wellness too. Due to its molecular structure and high lauric acid and medium chain triglyceride (MCT) content there really is a benefit for everyone, and it’s wonderfully versatile. I make sure we use it in every single product and I make sure it’s the highest grade of coconut oil so customers don’t lose any of those great benefits. Not all coconut oil is created equal.

I also really love the organic tea tree essential oil that we use in our Tea Tree Spearmint products, it has such fabulous skin healing benefits that I call it my natural first aid kit!

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

We have been USDA certified organic by Oregon Tilth for over 13 years now. As with anything that brings true satisfaction there are always challenges. Certifications take a lot of work and are costly. Oregon Tilth in particular is known as being one of the oldest, most established and strict certifying agents there are, but going through their program ensures we are not settling for anything but the cleanest ingredients. It even means the products are organic to a food standard! A USDA certified organic product must be Non GMO to be approved too, so that rules out any synthetic or toxic ingredients. There’s no point in any of this unless we keep our standards high and do our best. We keep going until we get it right, no matter how many times it takes.

After looking at the journey of our products, we can feel proud that we’ve come a long way. Formulas have continued to evolve and improve as we’ve learned more and as better and cleaner ingredients have become available. We constantly challenge ourselves to strive and improve.

Our mission is not to sacrifice purity or performance – this too can be challenging. Many pure ingredients don’t have the desired effects people expect, and the ingredients that give the desired effect don’t usually pass our high standards, so we really work hard to make sure we find the cleanest ingredients that also perform well too.

I believe in plant power, so creating products that are truly vegan, cruelty free and against animal testing is important to me. I make sure that all our vendors hold the same integrity, because we are all connected and should all move closer towards ethical production together. We do laugh though, because our resident Organic Fiji office dog really enjoys a little of our culinary coconut oil on her kibble, but she tests that with her own free will 😉

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

The first common myth is that organic beauty is too expensive. A higher grade of product does mean that you pay a slightly higher price point for organic ingredients – but you’re not paying for the chemical side effects later on in life, or the costs it takes to remedy them, so it’s absolutely worth it and cost effective overall. It is a valuable investment that will pay you dividends in the future. We make our line very affordable, with constant sales and free shipping options too. Organic Fiji is meant for everyone, not just high-end spas or people with higher incomes. (But it sure does feel like a pampering home-spa treatment you can enjoy!).

The second myth is that organic products don’t perform as well as mainstream products. I believe the performance of a product, any product, is a direct reflection of the brand’s effort to source ingredients that are both clean and beneficial, as well as perfecting the formulation no matter how long it takes. Green beauty doesn’t have to sacrifice quality when the brand spends valuable time and effort making sure the product performance is at the highest.

What motivates you to get up every day and keep going after getting knocked down by obstacles constantly?

What keeps us going is the customers! Sounds cliche, but it’s true. Sometimes when you feel tired and knocked down by logistical hurdles and a sometimes savage industry, the phone rings (we still have humans answering our phones!) and we connect with a customer. A customer who is picking up their phone to tell us how the products have changed their life in some unique way. We get customers who tell us about their psoriasis being cured by our products. We get customers telling us how severe their allergies are, how they’ve felt held back their whole life and now they have found an organic product that finally works for them. We get doctors from practices like Harbor General UCLA Medical Center telling us our organic coconut oil works better for their patient’s eczema than the steroids they’ve been prescribing for years. We even get farmers telling us they use our products on their pigs sensitive skin! Dog owners saying how our coconut oil helped their dogs coat. Acne sufferers with new confidence from clearer skin! It’s wild how diverse the feedback is. And it keeps coming, every day, like a positive reminder to keep going, even through the challenges.

Thank you Reycel Baysa for sharing your powerful story behind Organic Fiji Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Kendy Bourguignon Sencée from Antonin .B

#Founderspotlight - Antonin.B - Kendy Bourguignon Sencée

This post may contain affiliate links. If you buy something through one of these links, we’ll get a small commission which helps keep us moving the dial towards clean beauty!

#Founderspotlight - Antonin.B - Kendy Bourguignon Sencée

Antonin .B is a compact and minimalist line of salon quality hair products that everyone can use at home and that is created exclusively with 100% naturally sourced ingredients. Their formulas are a balance of traditions and modern green science in a very Caribbean mixing bowl.

What inspired you to start your business?

By the time I started working on Antonin .B as a project, I had been in the hair industry for a few years: first modeling, then working backstage and moving on to writing about the industry. The idea of Antonin .B came to me at a point in my life when I wanted to get some green back into my practices and incorporate nature in my everyday life (just like I was taught as a child in the Caribbean). But I made it a challenge. I wanted to create a brand that had professional grade formulas with 100% natural ingredients..

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

“Sometimes, customer information is a bit of a challenge because people are used to using products in a certain way. For instance, some people don’t want to believe that you only need 2 to 3 drops of our hair serum so they use more and feel it’s too heavy. It used to happen a lot at first. It took constant reminders and the help of other customers just like them who had used the product correctly and could attest that all you need is less.

As a small business producing in small batches, sourcing can be an issue. Working with ingredients that are a bit rarer in the beauty space and that are of higher quality leaves you vulnerable to price fluctuations: there are minimums to order and some suppliers will only work with high volumes; that means less choices and that also means much smaller profit because everything is more expensive.

Still on the topic of sourcing, going to trade shows as a youngish Black woman is not a plus. They’re a great place to find out about innovations or new suppliers but I’ve stopped going to those a few years ago because the atmosphere is not very welcoming. You can’t just go with your objective in mind. You have to take on an extra mental charge and develop strategies to be noticed or taken seriously. It’s exhausting to me (especially so because I’m an introvert).

I have decided to do sourcing from my desk, with my computer and my phone. I go through databases, search engines and proceed to make calls and send emails for product information, quotes and sample requests.”

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Everyone’s favorite from Antonin .B is the Ceramides Enriched Desert Serum. It works on all hair types and all you need is a few drops: for shine, conditioning and stronger hair (without the potential crispiness of proteins).

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

In our latest styling products collection (Backstage Cocktail), I’ve formulated the products with rum from my island (Guadeloupe). Over there, women add a little bit of rum to their homemade shampoos or hair masks to add shine (and a delicious smell) to their hair.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

When it comes to formulation, my standards are quite high:
– All ingredients must be naturally sourced;
– No GMOs are allowed;
– Whenever available, the ingredients must be certified organic. That means we have very high concentrations of organic ingredients in the formulas (from 68 to 88% depending on harvests); that’s much higher than Ecocert and COSMOS requirements;
– The end formula must be of professional quality: the products are actually used in the salon and I personally use them on set or backstage at fashion shows;
– And of course, the ingredients must be cruelty-free.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

It’s important to remember that green beauty is also science. A formula that has been carefully designed is not the same as a product whipped up “real quick” in the kitchen. Both are valid but they’re not necessarily comparable. Synergies between ingredients have a role to play; sophistication in the texture of the formula is also a significant aspect. When we aim for higher quality, green science really is at the center of green beauty.

BONUS: If interested, add your own question and answer as you know yourself best. The spirit of this is to highlight you and your hard work – and how you and or your brand are incredibly unique.Tip: provide content that has more depth or emotions!

Where does your name come from and what does it mean to you?

The name is in honor of my family. The B stands for Bourguignon, an old family in Guadeloupe dating from the 1700s. Antonin was my great-grandma’s grand-father and he’s the reason the family name is still alive.

My family and my lineage are important to me. We have a rich history and a presence in the Caribbean since the beginning of the European colonization of Guadeloupe in the 1600s and much knowledge about plants and nature has been passed down from generation to generation. I like to honor that.

Thank you Kendy Bourguignon Sencée for sharing your powerful story behind Antonin .B Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Theodora Ntovas from YASOU skin care

Founder of Yasou skin care - Theodora Ntovas

YASOU is a Greek-inspired, luxe wellness skin care line that is natural, contains certified organics, vegan, gluten-free, unisex, Leaping Bunny certified and made it the USA | Chicago. “YASOU” (pronounced ya-soo) is a common Greek greeting that is used to say “Hello” or “Good-Bye” but it’s original meaning is “A toast to your health.” YASOU’s mission is to combine the medicinal with luxury and change what luxe means in todays green beauty era by uniting “old world” quality with “new world” science. YASOU skin care is the manifestation of my heart and passion for good health, good ingredients and a happy life for all.

What inspired you to start your business?

There were several reasons. One was I wanted to created a luxe wellness line that was filled with really good ingredients and had a super high end application experience. When I started YASOU there were very few luxe wellness brands out there. An other reason was that it was a way to conceive something out of love that I could nourish and grow- a replacement to having children in a way that involves similar practices.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

The largest road block happened recently. My manufacturer closed her doors to retire and I was left with no one to help me make my products, so instead of closing my doors I decided to learn how to compound my own formulas and make them myself which is where I am presently.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Tough question cause I love all of them-each one took a long time to conceive and perfect. Right now I’ll have to choose my first one because it was very personal to me and it gave me the start to an entire line. That would be my EWG verified hydrating body cream with essential oils. The choice of aroma came from memories of my childhood while living with my grandparents in their small Greek village in the mountains; running around exploring nature on their land.

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

I love so many ingredients but do I adore my eco-certified marine based ingredient called Hydasine that is in my vegan cell renewal night cream. It has twice the amount of AHA than Hyaluronic Acid. I also LOVE Botanical Hyaluronic Acid because it absorbs into our skin so well and only works with water-based formulations.

We absolutely love the ethos of your company. Can you tell us more?

My Ethos is to use “old world” medicinal Greek ingredients like rosemary, lemon, anise, honey, certified organic extra virgin olive oil or mastic to name a few with “new world – science” ingredients like Hydasine, Stay C-50 or Pentavitin. Thus uniting “old world” quality with “new world” science to create a luxe wellness experience, changing what luxe means in today’s green beauty era.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

Biggest myth they just don’t work as well! I say they work even better when done correctly

OR

They cost too much! Well they usually last a lot longer because you don’t need to use as much because of the higher quality ingredients that are used in them.

You’re not an esthetician what makes you a skin authority?

I’m not an esthetician but had acne as a child and went to a lot of dermatologists thourgh out my life. In addition I grew up with grandmothers that made their own natural health and beauty products so I do have first hand knowledge and experience to share.

Thank you Theodora for sharing your powerful story behind YASOU skin care. Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Lily Morgan from Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care

#Founderspotlight - Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care - Lily Morgan

Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care grows, harvests and handcrafts their skin care fresh on their farm. For over 34 years, they are the only skin care company that places, “No synthetic ingredients, ever!” on every bottle they produce. Completely transparent in their sustainability you may visit their USDA certified organic farm and fresh pick your skin care.

After hearing Lily Morgan’s story behind why she decided to start Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care you’ll love her as much as we do.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had cyst acne as a teenager and it shaded my entire life. I had to find solutions. By the time I did, I was developing fine lines, so I doubled my efforts and started Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care. When I could not find organic ingredients available, before the internet and the USDA organic programs, I had to grow my own. Since I grew up working on my Dad’s apple orchard, planting, growing and harvesting came natural for me. That was nearly 35 years ago, we were the first organic skin care company in Colorado and now the longest running! We now have an 80 acre farm and event center, where we have 30 weddings a year!

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Initially, pre-internet, everything was difficult, especially sourcing organic ingredients. In addition, the FDA did a 3 day inspection of my then lab. While it was painful, it was a blessing because later I had to a national recall and I now know every FDA regulation to keep my customers safe and FDA happy. We were organic before there was, “greenwashing.” I wrote our book, Beauty, Health and Happiness–A way of life, over 20 years ago, to help women understand ingredients better and to make the statement that Beauty, Health and Happiness IS a way of life. We do not all look like fashion models, but we all have the ability to practice good health and look our best. We have been selling to Natural Grocers since 1986 and Whole Foods since they arrived in Colorado years later.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

I am in love with our Rejuvenating Enzyme mask! It makes your skin glow and look so fresh! The honey is antibacterial and a humectant that brings moisture from the air to your skin, comfrey is a cell proliferant and actually use to be called, Knitwort because it literally helps your skin reknit. It is the results after using it that are amazing, it removes dead skin and makes you happy!

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

Comfrey is a favorite ingredient that we grow on our USDA certified organic farm. Another is fennel which has been used historically to treat even serpent bits! Poultices were used to reduce swelling and is said to combat wrinkles. We also grow sage it is wonderful in toners and astringents and everyone loves the scent. It is healing and antiseptic. I love anything we grow it reflects the magic in the world. You plant this little seed or seedling and it grows into this big plant that gives us all such bounty.

We absolutely love the ethos of your company. Can you tell us more?

The first thing we want to do is give our customers amazing results! We do that by growing and hand harvesting our own ingredients. We make every single product up fresh in our own on farm FDA regulation laboratory without ever using any synthetic chemicals! Once we have made the best skin care in the world we try to leave the smallest carbon footprint of any skin care company. We package all full size in glass, we allow women to bring their packaging back to us to recycle on site, we often ship in recycled boxes, but what I love most is that we are keeping over 250 acres of Colorado’s Front Range farm land. We also guarantee all of our products if you do not love them we will give you 100% refund. BTW, I formulated each product closer to hundreds of times and then over 35 years, they are now perfect!

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

Great question, there is so much to say here…Number one, 98% of all the natural/clean/non toxic skin care is made by private labels. The skin care companies have nothing to do with their skin care. They have no idea of the ingredients. We say, “Ingredients are everything,” all the fancy packaging can never improve your skin. They are just marketers. There is nothing wrong with this as a business plan, actually, it is a much better and easier plan then buying a farm, equipment, FDA regulation laboratory equipment, meeting all the government standards, etc. However, the question is who makes the better organic skin care? In addition, the words, natural, organic, non toxic really mean nothing. The only words that really mean anything is, “No synthetic chemicals, ever!” Not that all synthetic chemicals are bad, but they have no business in quality organic skin care. The alternative is so far superior. Lavender essential oil, almond oil, fresh organic herbs. I could go on and on, if you want more I would be pleased to continue. Let me know.

Any thoughts that you want to share with everyone?

The word ‘cosmetics’ is derived from the word, cosmos . The word cosmos was originally defined as, “the order of the universe.” There is a direct correlation between how you look and how you feel. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians knew this fact. Throughout history a daily ritual of beauty care is an accepted ritual. The question is what kind of products do you want to use, where do they come from and who makes them?

Thank you Lily for sharing your powerful story behind Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care. Your dedication for creating top quality products that are kind to the earth and kind to people is absolutely inspiring!

One of the best lipsticks in the clean beauty industry: YULIP’s Non-toxic Wednesday Fever lipstick

Beauty that doesn’t harm ourself, our planet, and even animals. YULIP features non-toxic beauty that really outperforms conventional beauty.

After hearing Heasung’s story behind her award-winning product, and why she decided to start YULIP you’ll love her as much as we do.

What inspired you to start your business?

My whole career was related to beauty industry, even prior to my role as a founder/CEO of YULIP. Although I’ve never dreamed of owning my business, I always knew I would pursue something related to beauty. Beauty is my passion that makes me feel alive. However, my skin is too sensitive to embrace all the products I desire and love. I have had pretty bad allergic reactions to parabens, blue dyes, and chemical ingredients, therefore I couldn’t enjoy makeup products as much as I wanted. And when I became a mother to a daughter, I realized that most moms would be more careful of what they put on their skin because it would eventually transmit to our babies. That’s when I thought of a lipstick that I can actually wear without worrying about my daughter and that my daughter would wear it one day without hurting herself. So, long story short, my daughter is my muse and she inspired me to create YULIP.

In your journey of creating natural products, what were some roadblocks or issues that you were faced with?

Every step I made, there were always roadblocks. Back in 2016-2017, when I founded this brand in South Korea, I wasn’t even sure if there was any market for a ‘clean lipstick.’ It seemed to me that people didn’t really care about the ingredients of lipstick as much as they care about those of skincare products. Or they would think all-natural lipstick is not simply beautiful. It’s not fancy or trendy. Therefore, my first issue was to educate consumers, enlighten them with the facts of bad lipstick which wasn’t easy. But with my own true story, I constantly talked how bad lipsticks can be, how they linger around your face even after cleansing. Even finding the right manufacturer wasn’t easy. Most of the cosmetic labs or manufacturers didn’t meet my requirements in terms of sustainably sourced ingredients, all-natural ingredients, and cruelty-free. They would turn down my ideas and formulations because it would be less cost effective, longer process, and simply not conventional. But I couldn’t stop. I met almost every possible labs and finally found one. But even now every time I develop new shades or products, there are endless arguments and settlements. For them, I might be the most difficult person to work with for sure.

Your Wednesday Fever Lipstick is Top 3 for the 5th Clean Beauty Awards – can you tell us more about this product?

Many people often asked me who named the lipstick shades. Now that we have more people at YULIP, we share all our ideas together. However, back then when I first founded this company, I did everything from researching ingredients to naming products. Especially when I was naming the shades, I poured all my crazy ideas into them. This ‘Wednesday Fever,’ particularly, reflects my own desire. While I would nurse my daughter when she was a baby, like most moms do, I needed some rest badly, and I really wanted to have a break from everything. Weekdays felt like eternity to me back then, so I would dream of hanging out with my girlfriends on Wednesday nights with bold makeup on. A deep raspberry red shade is something that I’d love to wear on Wednesday to make me go through the week. But in reality, I was just a mom with an infant who doesn’t have a chance to wear bold red lips. That’s why I thought of subtle red that flatters most skin tones. The color everyone would wear which is ultra clean, moisturizing, super light to wear, and easy to remove. In order to complete this specific formulation, I spent almost a year from research of ingredients to finalization of the perfect deep berry red color.

We absolutely love the ethos of your company. Can you tell us more?

Our lipstick is created for all including sensitive people. Because I am one of them, and my daughter is also one of them, I knew exactly what I needed to create. If I could wear, that means many people who never wear lipstick could too. All of our products are made with natural (naturally-derived) ingredients, non-GMO, USDA and UK Soil Association certified organic ingredients. No artificial, synthetic, or chemical ingredients, no nano ingredients are allowed in our lipstick / vegan lip balm.

Most clean lipsticks still use fragrances from natural sources. However at YULIP, we decided not to use any fragrance in our lipstick even though it’s natural because it may cause allergic reactions among certain sensitive groups like mom-to-be. I strongly believe I can still create beautiful lipstick even with limited selection of ingredients.  And this clean beauty award proved that I took the right way.

Thank you Heasung for sharing your powerful story behind YULIP. Thank you for creating top quality award-winning natural lipsticks with bold and beautiful colours!

Founder Spotlight: An Interview with Elaine Li from Iremia Skincare

#Founderspotlight - Iremia Skincare - Elaine Li

#Founderspotlight - Iremia Skincare - Elaine Li

Two of the best face creams in the clean beauty industry: Iremia Skincare’s Soothing Lotion & Protective Cream

Iremia Skincare is a Toronto-based, cruelty-free, small-batch skincare line created by CPG brand veteran, Elaine Li. After years of working in corporate marketing, Elaine went on a personal quest to create something that would work for her sensitive skin and launched a soothing skincare line. Named after the Greek word for calm, Iremia Skincare has been created to provide a solution for those who have highly sensitive skin and offers a luxurious yet conscious and calming solution for the entire family.

After hearing Elaine’s story behind each award-winning product, and why she decided to start Iremia Skincare you’ll love her as much as we do.

What inspired you to start your business?

Finding something that was suitable for my reactive and sensitive skin, and that I could also use while pregnant and on my small child was the driving factor. I had rosacea and eczema, and had taken prescription medications, used prescription creams, used natural and non-natural products to try to calm my skin with no success and was determined to find something that would fit all my needs. I was also coming out of two miscarriages and was watchful and sensitive of the ingredients I needed (and wanted) to avoid.

In your journey of creating natural products, what were some roadblocks or issues that you were faced with?

Finding suitable ingredients, especially when it comes to keeping the products fresh, for my extremely reactive skin has been a big challenge. I have been known to react to ingredients that may be ‘safe’ for sensitive skin, so finding the right ingredients in combination with the formula can be a very long process. We take a slower approach to creating new products, taking our time to look for the right ingredients, to perfect the formulas and packaging and test it on our skin!

Your products are Top 3 for the 5th Clean Beauty Awards – can you tell us more about these products?

Our Soothing Lotion was the first product that we formulated. Working with an incredible chemist, it’s the perfect solution to sensitive skin but also acts as an anti-ageing moisturizer. Our products need to have multiple purposes in order to cut down the number of products we use on our sensitive skin, which is part of our ethos. It has an incredibly smooth texture and calming scent and really helps calm redness while smoothing out pores, wrinkles and fine lines. It’s our best seller.

As a formulator, you must have some special love for some ingredients. What are your favourites?

Sea buckthorn oil is one of my personal favourites. It has so many nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial to your skin and your health. It has been used for centuries to treat burns and scars, and is rich in essential fatty acids, tocopherols, phytosterols, and carotenes. It’s one of the 11 oils we use in the Restorative Facial Oil and contributes to the improvement of scars and healing.

Another favourite ingredient isn’t widely talked about but it’s African Mahogony Tree Bark extract. It’s our star ingredient in our Soothing Lotion, our newest award-winner, making it extra special. African mahogany is a medium-sized tree which can grow up to 15-20 m height. It’s bark and wood is valued in traditional medicine where it originates from and widely used against fever caused by malaria, and against stomach complaints, diarrhea, dysentery and anemia. We wanted to include it as part of our Soothing Lotion as it is proven to have multi-dimensional anti-ageing efficacy on improving skin elasticity, smoothing effect on pores and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, making our product multifunctional.

In studies, after 28 days of treatment with African Mahogany Tree Bark extract, a 9.6% improvement of immediate elasticity was observed. This improvement was confirmed after 56 days of treatment, with an 11.6% improvement over placebo. It has also shown a 13% and 16.2% improvement of crow’s feet wrinkle area and volume respectively, after 56 days of treatment. It improves wrinkle area and volume, smoothing of pores and fine lines, for a complete rejuvenating effect.

We absolutely love the ethos of Iremia Skincare. Can you tell us more?

Our ethos is propped up by three pillars that help us make decisions – conscious impact, mental health, and calming wellness. These break down into choosing quality over quantity (minimal approach), positive mental health and balance, and calming holistic wellness that fuels our search for ingredients that help with soothing our skin.

Our creation process is long. It’s driven by questioning our needs and if we truly need to add something to our product line. With consumerism at a high, we want to take a different approach and slow things down. From our quest to search for ingredients that are non-GMO that can help calm our skin, support and nurture it, to whether we can incorporate it into our rituals and routines, even to the quality of our packaging, we make sure our products can contribute to your sense of well-being.

In the end, we look forward to contributing towards your journey, whatever that may look like and wherever you are in it. Our hope is to help evoke a complete sense of calm into your daily beauty routine.

Thank you Elaine for sharing your powerful story behind Iremia Skincare. Thank you for creating top quality products revolved around holistic wellness and balance, that is meant to soothe us! Round of applause!
