What inspired you to start your business?

When my relatives or me were facing some health issues, I would always try to find a solution, a natural one. As biochemist, naturopath and my life mission being to share my knowledge and help people feel better, I used to make traditional mixtures for their relief, learnt from my mother and my academic journey. All the products I created were to answer a real need. When I arrived in Montreal, it was so cold that my teeth became unbearably sensitive. So, I made the first version of the tooth paste. A friend of mine was really suffering from uncomfortable under eye bags and eye tension. That was the opportunity to create the Under-eye bag treatment. Dry and bleeding hands of my son: the Power cream. Fine neck wrinkles erased in 3 days: Fountain of youth serum. Rosacea and nervous redness on the face: Facial tonifying cleanser … While doing so, I had never actually thought about creating a skin care line. After one year helping people around, during the same week, 3 of my friends asked me why I would not create a safe and effective skin care line. I was not convinced. They insisted: ‘You can formulate products, you can write about them and educate people, and you have a passionate connection to nature!’ That is how I started in 2000 this huge adventure where I had so much to offer and even more to learn.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

I had taught at the university for more than 20 years and run a scientific research lab and led few thesis. It was easy for me to write and educate people, to formulate products. I had a very precise idea of what I wanted as a design and I met talented and devoted people to manifest it. I was organized, inspired and we worked tirelessly for 18 months. I even could go through the records at Health Canada and the entire administration work. Then came the fateful moment of entering the market. 1st difficulty: the sensitivity of these ‘living’ products since without the chemical panoply of preservatives, emulsifiers, etc. they could not be stored directly on shelves but had to be stored in refrigerated displays. In 2002 it did not exist for cosmetics! However, one store has concluded with us – in large part because of a naturopath working there who immediately understood the potential of these products and knew how to present and sell them. That is the point 2 : education about the products. It lasted the 2 years that she worked there. Then we had to follow up with owners who were not very motivated and it was rather heavy. Some stores were interested in other provinces but the concept was still too new (5% of people were looking for this kind of product at this time) and therefore little sale if we were not able to be in the store to explain their benefits. Fortunately new educational and protection consumer organizations were born around 2005 : Skindeep, Safe Cosmetics, Healthy Tomorrow, Living Toxin Free … We contacted them and they understood that our vision was exactly what they wanted to spread. So they started talking about the Arganat brand and since then we limited our sales through internet, directly appealing to the niche that our products were intended for. Then in 2019 Purpicks started to give us a greater visibility. We are grateful to be appreciated for our hard work and we want my family and the whole team to keep a human dimension to the company – albeit fruitful – that allows us to maintain the quality of our products and our close relationship to our customers.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Very difficult choice to make! I love them all. In particular, I can not do without either of the Natural Toothpaste for teeth and gum, of the Power Cream or the Fountain of Youth Serum for their versatility and all the benefits they provide me! If I am only entitled to one, I will opt for the Fountain of Youth Serum! It is my comfort punch to start a new day. This is my makeup base. This is my preparation for a good regenerating night with a steady self love ritual every evening. It whispers and caresses my skin, tones it, restructures it, protects it too. It connects me to my skin and makes me feel beautiful! The precious ingredients in this Serum, are first the EXTRA VIRGIN RAW ARGAN OIL, powerful anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, hydrating, improves blood circulation (vitamin E), anti-inflammatory, anti-aging (vitamin E & F) regenerates aged and/or tired skin, increases skin elasticity, repairs damaged or dry skin, stimulates collagen synthesis and prevents the formation of wrinkles due to UV rays (vitamin A). Then come the essential oils : DAMASK ROSE ideal for all skin types, perfect for dry or aging skin, tightens the pores. This oil has excellent emollient and moisturizing properties and combined with its stimulating and antiseptic properties. It has anti inflammatory, disinfectant, immunostimulant, deodorant impact and stimulates blood circulation. It has calming and emotionally balancing effect which helps to soothe anxiety and stress. TANACETUM PARTHENIUM (FEVERFEW) OIL, parthenolide free, with multifarious therapeutic and cosmetic properties : anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, antioxidant, great to manage adult dermatoses, such as rosacea for atopic dermatitis and sensitive skin. CALENDULA skin regenerating, toning and healing properties. No surprise when we find out through a Kirlian analysis (measure of chakra and aura energy) of the Fountain of Youth Serum that it stimulates communication and compassion, it helps sweetness takes place, creating harmony and making healing possible, that it calms down and balances. What a gift!
 

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

Argan oil is the queen, the rarest and most precious tree of youth on the planet that does miracles – in the kitchen, as a remedy and as a cosmetic. And I love it and I choose it carefully. But essential oils enchant my soul and delight my senses. Of course, I first seek according to their traditionally recognized virtues. Then I choose artisans who make organic or wild essential oils, even those who cannot afford to get certifications. Just by ‘smelling’ an essential oil, I am able to guess its impact on the skin, its impact on the mood, and even sometimes how it has been extracted. Then I ‘touch’ the oil, and I learn a little more about it. These tests usually confirm the beauty secrets my mother shared with me. My favorites essential oils come from rose petal, bud and flower bitter orange, true lavender flower, pink geranium flower, jasmine flower, immortal flower, and sandalwood, to name only those. All these essential oils have the power to lift up the mood and most of them are aphrodisiacs. And not to forget their extraordinary cosmetic properties! (as described in our website). Unfortunately some of these precious and expensive essential oils are poorly rated by EWG even when used in acceptable concentrations. We understand that there are more and more people who suffer from increased sensitivity due to our daily pollution exposition, who suffer from odors good or bad and are allergic to some natural components. We do take this into account since we are working on unscented versions of some of our products to meet their needs. But for those who love the arousing scents that nature provides us, they will be spoiled with our products!

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients.

As a biochemist and naturopath I believe in my skills to formulate correctly our products. And yes, I formulate over 20 times to perfect the formulation and I personally test each of them. Most of our ingredients are organic or wild. But it is not affordable for most artisans to get certifications. Our products are natural, clean, edible, nontoxic, cruelty free-no animal testing (I am the first to test all the products, then my consenting relatives). From customer’s feedback, it seems that some products work well for dogs and cats (Toothpaste and Power cream). We use glass and BPA free plastic jars. Our new product Preciosa day cream have been tested for 2 years now and really appreciated – it will be launched on falls 2020. We have always refused to add sugar and foam to our toothpaste. We usually ask sugar addicts to give it a try for 2-3 days – it often works.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

It doesn’t have to smell like a veterinary product to be green! Some clean beauty products may cost a lot. But if they are made of precious ingredients, if they are concentrated and versatile like ours, it is cost effective in short-middle term. Some products are called ‘green’ but are not. Some corporations have jumped into this very lucrative market offering sometimes ‘false green’…

If you had to do it again, would you do it again?

It was pretty see saw 20 years… started in enthusiasm and creativity, counting neither my time nor my money. Then we had to face the constraints of the market first very small and then a real wild jungle. Few times I almost gave up … and each time an event prevented me to: either a large order or an unexpected help. I always stood for my principles. I refused partnerships with people who wanted to change ingredients for lower quality ones or use less concentrated active ingredients to decrease the product cost. I refused to be complacent to make more benefits at the expense of our customers and our quality products. People are getting more and more able to better distinguish what is good for them and are more conscious consumers. I love creating products, I love explaining their impact and I am so happy when my customers tell me that our products are making a difference in their lives! I am amazed when they tell me about positive effects that we had not expected. And they are a lot – that is why most of our products are versatile! All my life I allowed myself to do what I love the best: sharing my knowledge and being of service to others, helping them to be who they really are and feel better. Bartering my university role of researcher and teacher to become an entrepreneur (educator and researcher one) and naturopath with the freedom and the uncertainties that that implies – was a way to transcend my limits, discover new possibilities and new skills! So yes, if it were to be done again, I would do it again – just taking more care of myself and my family.

What inspired you to start your business?

My inspiration came with the birth of my son Lucas. I tried to find – and failed – to find products which
I felt were good enough to use on his sensitive skin which were organic, gentle yet highly effective
and beautifully packaged. I really wanted to create something to support that unique emotional
experience which goes with having a newborn and those precious moments that go with it.

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

The most challenging aspects when launching the brand was to get it known to a wider audience,
which typically can only be achieved with strong marketing efforts, which often comes with a high
price tag. Smaller brands need to be creative as they can’t afford what the bigger or more
established brands can. We work closely with our retailers to help support them with the brand as
well authentic and engaged influencers who have been instrumental in getting our brand ‘out there’.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

One of our latest products is also one of my favourite products, the Wrapped in Love calming anti-pollution face cream for babies. It’s really the perfect answer for an urban family. The cream acts as a barrier protecting delicate baby skin from harsh environmental pollutants, while also soothing and calming even the most sensitive of skins thanks to its unique anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant combination of organic ingredients. Antonin .B is a compact and minimalist line of salon quality hair products that everyone can use at home and that is created exclusively with 100% naturally sourced ingredients. Their formulas are a balance of traditions and modern green science in a very Caribbean mixing bowl.

 

What inspired you to start your business?

By the time I started working on Antonin .B as a project, I had been in the hair industry for a few years: first modeling, then working backstage and moving on to writing about the industry. The idea of Antonin .B came to me at a point in my life when I wanted to get some green back into my practices and incorporate nature in my everyday life (just like I was taught as a child in the Caribbean). But I made it a challenge. I wanted to create a brand that had professional grade formulas with 100% natural ingredients..

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

“Sometimes, customer information is a bit of a challenge because people are used to using products in a certain way. For instance, some people don’t want to believe that you only need 2 to 3 drops of our hair serum so they use more and feel it’s too heavy. It used to happen a lot at first. It took constant reminders and the help of other customers just like them who had used the product correctly and could attest that all you need is less.

As a small business producing in small batches, sourcing can be an issue. Working with ingredients that are a bit rarer in the beauty space and that are of higher quality leaves you vulnerable to price fluctuations: there are minimums to order and some suppliers will only work with high volumes; that means less choices and that also means much smaller profit because everything is more expensive.

Still on the topic of sourcing, going to trade shows as a youngish Black woman is not a plus. They’re a great place to find out about innovations or new suppliers but I’ve stopped going to those a few years ago because the atmosphere is not very welcoming. You can’t just go with your objective in mind. You have to take on an extra mental charge and develop strategies to be noticed or taken seriously. It’s exhausting to me (especially so because I’m an introvert).

I have decided to do sourcing from my desk, with my computer and my phone. I go through databases, search engines and proceed to make calls and send emails for product information, quotes and sample requests.”

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

Everyone’s favorite from Antonin .B is the Ceramides Enriched Desert Serum. It works on all hair types and all you need is a few drops: for shine, conditioning and stronger hair (without the potential crispiness of proteins).

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

In our latest styling products collection (Backstage Cocktail), I’ve formulated the products with rum from my island (Guadeloupe). Over there, women add a little bit of rum to their homemade shampoos or hair masks to add shine (and a delicious smell) to their hair.

Share your brand ethos and how you demonstrate credibility as it relates to your formulation and ingredients

When it comes to formulation, my standards are quite high:
– All ingredients must be naturally sourced;
– No GMOs are allowed;
– Whenever available, the ingredients must be certified organic. That means we have very high concentrations of organic ingredients in the formulas (from 68 to 88% depending on harvests); that’s much higher than Ecocert and COSMOS requirements;
– The end formula must be of professional quality: the products are actually used in the salon and I personally use them on set or backstage at fashion shows;
– And of course, the ingredients must be cruelty-free.

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

It’s important to remember that green beauty is also science. A formula that has been carefully designed is not the same as a product whipped up “real quick” in the kitchen. Both are valid but they’re not necessarily comparable. Synergies between ingredients have a role to play; sophistication in the texture of the formula is also a significant aspect. When we aim for higher quality, green science really is at the center of green beauty.

Where does your name come from and what does it mean to you?

The name is in honor of my family. The B stands for Bourguignon, an old family in Guadeloupe dating from the 1700s. Antonin was my great-grandma’s grand-father and he’s the reason the family name is still alive.

My family and my lineage are important to me. We have a rich history and a presence in the Caribbean since the beginning of the European colonization of Guadeloupe in the 1600s and much knowledge about plants and nature has been passed down from generation to generation. I like to honor that.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had cyst acne as a teenager and it shaded my entire life. I had to find solutions. By the time I did, I was developing fine lines, so I doubled my efforts and started Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care. When I could not find organic ingredients available, before the internet and the USDA organic programs, I had to grow my own. Since I grew up working on my Dad’s apple orchard, planting, growing and harvesting came natural for me. That was nearly 35 years ago, we were the first organic skin care company in Colorado and now the longest running! We now have an 80 acre farm and event center, where we have 30 weddings a year!

What were some roadblocks/issues that you have faced? How have you prevailed?

Initially, pre-internet, everything was difficult, especially sourcing organic ingredients. In addition, the FDA did a 3 day inspection of my then lab. While it was painful, it was a blessing because later I had to a national recall and I now know every FDA regulation to keep my customers safe and FDA happy. We were organic before there was, “greenwashing.” I wrote our book, Beauty, Health and Happiness–A way of life, over 20 years ago, to help women understand ingredients better and to make the statement that Beauty, Health and Happiness IS a way of life. We do not all look like fashion models, but we all have the ability to practice good health and look our best. We have been selling to Natural Grocers since 1986 and Whole Foods since they arrived in Colorado years later.

What is one of your favourite products? Can you tell us more about this product?

I am in love with our Rejuvenating Enzyme mask! It makes your skin glow and look so fresh! The honey is antibacterial and a humectant that brings moisture from the air to your skin, comfrey is a cell proliferant and actually use to be called, Knitwort because it literally helps your skin reknit. It is the results after using it that are amazing, it removes dead skin and makes you happy!

What are your favourite ingredients and why?

Comfrey is a favorite ingredient that we grow on our USDA certified organic farm. Another is fennel which has been used historically to treat even serpent bits! Poultices were used to reduce swelling and is said to combat wrinkles. We also grow sage it is wonderful in toners and astringents and everyone loves the scent. It is healing and antiseptic. I love anything we grow it reflects the magic in the world. You plant this little seed or seedling and it grows into this big plant that gives us all such bounty.

We absolutely love the ethos of your company. Can you tell us more?

The first thing we want to do is give our customers amazing results! We do that by growing and hand harvesting our own ingredients. We make every single product up fresh in our own on farm FDA regulation laboratory without ever using any synthetic chemicals! Once we have made the best skin care in the world we try to leave the smallest carbon footprint of any skin care company. We package all full size in glass, we allow women to bring their packaging back to us to recycle on site, we often ship in recycled boxes, but what I love most is that we are keeping over 250 acres of Colorado’s Front Range farm land. We also guarantee all of our products if you do not love them we will give you 100% refund. BTW, I formulated each product closer to hundreds of times and then over 35 years, they are now perfect!

What are some myths in the clean/green beauty sector that should be debunked?

Great question, there is so much to say here…Number one, 98% of all the natural/clean/non toxic skin care is made by private labels. The skin care companies have nothing to do with their skin care. They have no idea of the ingredients. We say, “Ingredients are everything,” all the fancy packaging can never improve your skin. They are just marketers. There is nothing wrong with this as a business plan, actually, it is a much better and easier plan then buying a farm, equipment, FDA regulation laboratory equipment, meeting all the government standards, etc. However, the question is who makes the better organic skin care? In addition, the words, natural, organic, non toxic really mean nothing. The only words that really mean anything is, “No synthetic chemicals, ever!” Not that all synthetic chemicals are bad, but they have no business in quality organic skin care. The alternative is so far superior. Lavender essential oil, almond oil, fresh organic herbs. I could go on and on, if you want more I would be pleased to continue. Let me know.

The word ‘cosmetics’ is derived from the word, cosmos . The word cosmos was originally defined as, “the order of the universe.” There is a direct correlation between how you look and how you feel. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians knew this fact. Throughout history a daily ritual of beauty care is an accepted ritual. The question is what kind of products do you want to use, where do they come from and who makes them?

What inspired you to start your business?

My whole career was related to beauty industry, even prior to my role as a founder/CEO of YULIP. Although I’ve never dreamed of owning my business, I always knew I would pursue something related to beauty. Beauty is my passion that makes me feel alive. However, my skin is too sensitive to embrace all the products I desire and love. I have had pretty bad allergic reactions to parabens, blue dyes, and chemical ingredients, therefore I couldn’t enjoy makeup products as much as I wanted. And when I became a mother to a daughter, I realized that most moms would be more careful of what they put on their skin because it would eventually transmit to our babies. That’s when I thought of a lipstick that I can actually wear without worrying about my daughter and that my daughter would wear it one day without hurting herself. So, long story short, my daughter is my muse and she inspired me to create YULIP.

In your journey of creating natural products, what were some roadblocks or issues that you were faced with?

Every step I made, there were always roadblocks. Back in 2016-2017, when I founded this brand in South Korea, I wasn’t even sure if there was any market for a ‘clean lipstick.’ It seemed to me that people didn’t really care about the ingredients of lipstick as much as they care about those of skincare products. Or they would think all-natural lipstick is not simply beautiful. It’s not fancy or trendy. Therefore, my first issue was to educate consumers, enlighten them with the facts of bad lipstick which wasn’t easy. But with my own true story, I constantly talked how bad lipsticks can be, how they linger around your face even after cleansing. Even finding the right manufacturer wasn’t easy. Most of the cosmetic labs or manufacturers didn’t meet my requirements in terms of sustainably sourced ingredients, all-natural ingredients, and cruelty-free. They would turn down my ideas and formulations because it would be less cost effective, longer process, and simply not conventional. But I couldn’t stop. I met almost every possible labs and finally found one. But even now every time I develop new shades or products, there are endless arguments and settlements. For them, I might be the most difficult person to work with for sure.

Your Wednesday Fever Lipstick is Top 3 for the 5th Clean Beauty Awards – can you tell us more about this product?

Many people often asked me who named the lipstick shades. Now that we have more people at YULIP, we share all our ideas together. However, back then when I first founded this company, I did everything from researching ingredients to naming products. Especially when I was naming the shades, I poured all my crazy ideas into them. This ‘Wednesday Fever,’ particularly, reflects my own desire. While I would nurse my daughter when she was a baby, like most moms do, I needed some rest badly, and I really wanted to have a break from everything. Weekdays felt like eternity to me back then, so I would dream of hanging out with my girlfriends on Wednesday nights with bold makeup on. A deep raspberry red shade is something that I’d love to wear on Wednesday to make me go through the week. But in reality, I was just a mom with an infant who doesn’t have a chance to wear bold red lips. That’s why I thought of subtle red that flatters most skin tones. The color everyone would wear which is ultra clean, moisturizing, super light to wear, and easy to remove. In order to complete this specific formulation, I spent almost a year from research of ingredients to finalization of the perfect deep berry red color.

We absolutely love the ethos of your company. Can you tell us more?

Our lipstick is created for all including sensitive people. Because I am one of them, and my daughter is also one of them, I knew exactly what I needed to create. If I could wear, that means many people who never wear lipstick could too. All of our products are made with natural (naturally-derived) ingredients, non-GMO, USDA and UK Soil Association certified organic ingredients. No artificial, synthetic, or chemical ingredients, no nano ingredients are allowed in our lipstick / vegan lip balm.

Most clean lipsticks still use fragrances from natural sources. However at YULIP, we decided not to use any fragrance in our lipstick even though it’s natural because it may cause allergic reactions among certain sensitive groups like mom-to-be. I strongly believe I can still create beautiful lipstick even with limited selection of ingredients.  And this clean beauty award proved that I took the right way.

After years of working in corporate marketing, Elaine went on a personal quest to create something that would work for her sensitive skin and launched a soothing skincare line. Named after the Greek word for calm, Iremia Skincare has been created to provide a solution for those who have highly sensitive skin and offers a luxurious yet conscious and calming solution for the entire family.

After hearing Elaine’s story behind each award-winning product, and why she decided to start Iremia Skincare you’ll love her as much as we do.

What inspired you to start your business?

Finding something that was suitable for my reactive and sensitive skin, and that I could also use while pregnant and on my small child was the driving factor. I had rosacea and eczema, and had taken prescription medications, used prescription creams, used natural and non-natural products to try to calm my skin with no success and was determined to find something that would fit all my needs. I was also coming out of two miscarriages and was watchful and sensitive of the ingredients I needed (and wanted) to avoid.

In your journey of creating natural products, what were some roadblocks or issues that you were faced with?

Finding suitable ingredients, especially when it comes to keeping the products fresh, for my extremely reactive skin has been a big challenge. I have been known to react to ingredients that may be ‘safe’ for sensitive skin, so finding the right ingredients in combination with the formula can be a very long process. We take a slower approach to creating new products, taking our time to look for the right ingredients, to perfect the formulas and packaging and test it on our skin!

Your products are Top 3 for the 5th Clean Beauty Awards – can you tell us more about these products?

Our Soothing Lotion was the first product that we formulated. Working with an incredible chemist, it’s the perfect solution to sensitive skin but also acts as an anti-ageing moisturizer. Our products need to have multiple purposes in order to cut down the number of products we use on our sensitive skin, which is part of our ethos. It has an incredibly smooth texture and calming scent and really helps calm redness while smoothing out pores, wrinkles and fine lines. It’s our best seller.

As a formulator, you must have some special love for some ingredients. What are your favourites?

Sea buckthorn oil is one of my personal favourites. It has so many nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial to your skin and your health. It has been used for centuries to treat burns and scars, and is rich in essential fatty acids, tocopherols, phytosterols, and carotenes. It’s one of the 11 oils we use in the Restorative Facial Oil and contributes to the improvement of scars and healing.

Another favourite ingredient isn’t widely talked about but it’s African Mahogony Tree Bark extract. It’s our star ingredient in our Soothing Lotion, our newest award-winner, making it extra special. African mahogany is a medium-sized tree which can grow up to 15-20 m height. It’s bark and wood is valued in traditional medicine where it originates from and widely used against fever caused by malaria, and against stomach complaints, diarrhea, dysentery and anemia. We wanted to include it as part of our Soothing Lotion as it is proven to have multi-dimensional anti-ageing efficacy on improving skin elasticity, smoothing effect on pores and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, making our product multifunctional.

In studies, after 28 days of treatment with African Mahogany Tree Bark extract, a 9.6% improvement of immediate elasticity was observed. This improvement was confirmed after 56 days of treatment, with an 11.6% improvement over placebo. It has also shown a 13% and 16.2% improvement of crow’s feet wrinkle area and volume respectively, after 56 days of treatment. It improves wrinkle area and volume, smoothing of pores and fine lines, for a complete rejuvenating effect.

Our ethos is propped up by three pillars that help us make decisions – conscious impact, mental health, and calming wellness. These break down into choosing quality over quantity (minimal approach), positive mental health and balance, and calming holistic wellness that fuels our search for ingredients that help with soothing our skin.

Our creation process is long. It’s driven by questioning our needs and if we truly need to add something to our product line. With consumerism at a high, we want to take a different approach and slow things down. From our quest to search for ingredients that are non-GMO that can help calm our skin, support and nurture it, to whether we can incorporate it into our rituals and routines, even to the quality of our packaging, we make sure our products can contribute to your sense of well-being.

So what you get in the end is a product that helps you achieve multiple goals.

What inspired you to create this product?

Our Soothing Lotion was the first product that we formulated. It came to me as I was coming out of my miscarriages, and encountered a negative reaction to another product I was using to try and help with my eczema and rosacea. It was also after years of doctors and dermatologists telling me they didn’t know what was wrong with the raised, red patch on my face and had put me on oral and topical steroids. I was frustrated and decided to create something from scratch that would help with my skin. I was fortunate enough to find an amazing chemist at the time, and after about a year and a half of working off the ingredients I had in my head, testing and refining, we were able to get the formula right. Our products are formulated with non-GMO ingredients, and we take a very slow and meticulous approach to the creation process. It really speaks to the ethos of the brand, to be mindful of if we really need to add more to our routine. How can we simplify without sacrificing efficacy? How can we best deliver what our skin needs without adding more to our routine (so we can spend time indulging in what we already have)? These are some of the questions I ask myself early on in the formulation stage.
